It's only against people with dispel magic. For some reason, DM = LOSE hp with vampiric aura, rather than reduction of the gain.

no, that's expected behavior as anyone who's used VA with high penalty armor can tell you... the upside is I thoughtfully capped how low your VA can be taken.

But I have no penalty! The character is ONLY wearing the tattoo...how is it making sense that VA is actually killing me with no armor penalties?

If it helps, you can think of DM as a huge armor penalty.

VA at level 0 is worse than no VA.

vendo: you are right, DM only affects cast enchantments, not status effects that look sort of enchantmentish.
