Anti-virus software for Windows (in Off-topic)

I just noticed that the anti virus software on my parent's PC doesn't want to update anymore as the first (free ;) year subscription expired.
As all my computers can't catch viruses, I have no clue what good anti-virus software exist today. I'm looking for something that's:
* Cheap.
* Doesn't require you to use your credit card too often (is *everything* on subscription these days?).
* Runs quietly in the background without cryptic popups.
* Automatically updates the latest anti-virus definitions.

Not Anit-Virus, but stinger.exe is updated about every month, is free, and works well

Just Google stinger.exe

Oh, but you do need to go download the latest, It will tell you when it is out of date :)

grisoft. They have a free version for home use. Works great, been using it for years. Make sure you download the free version. The others are pay or trial.

what, your parents aren't running BSD? :)

Nope, they are using Windows XP Home :(

Several people have suggested AVG, and that's what my parents are using right now.

From the McAfee website: Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system.
