Power abuse? (in Public Record)

{cb1}dyno February 20 2005 4:00 AM EST

Tonight is my last night in chat. A few days ago, I had been witness to someone using foul language in new players, with no ops in sight. I've been an avid CB player since October, rarely missing a day. As I felt that I could help in situations where other ops weren't present, I figured I would ask another op what steps were to be taken if one was interested in helping out. Gun happened to be the first one I saw. When I approached him regarding it, I was told I was not "Op material", which I was a bit put off by as neither of us have had much contact with each other, and I have yet to cause anyone any grief.

Tonight I came home to burn off my final BA, and was looking at chat to see this:

<Gun> so no **** stuff in place of the bad word
<Bamaru> oh can i say butt

I decided to joke around ** IN GOOD TASTE **, so I replied with:

<dynom|te> what about good words
<dynom|te> like
<dynom|te> i ate some swiss *!*^#( today

I think anyone can see that, regardless of whether or not it appeals to their humor, there is absolutely nothing in what I said that would violate CB policy. I was just playing around, but within seconds Gun kicks me. I private message him to find out exactly the reason, at which point this conversation takes place:

=> Gun what was that about?
<Gun> you know what you were doing
=> Gun I made a joke, a completely appropriate joke
=> Gun what was i kicked for.
<Gun> #*%#(% <-- this (expletive deleted - nice to see he drops the pg rule in private)
=> Gun it stood for cheese, what is the problem with that
<Gun> why would cheese need to be in #*%#$^% form :P
=> Gun ... did you not read that?
=> Gun <Gun> so no **** stuff in place of the bad word
=> Gun <dynom|te> what about good words
=> Gun <dynom|te> like'
=> Gun <dynom|te> i ate some swiss *!*^#( today
<Gun> what's your point? you ain't going no where boy

I'm not expecting change. I don't expect Gun to be removed as an op, he's been around a long time and odds are Jonathon has him around for a reason. I think that its good when people like Gun step up to the plate to make CB one of the best-ran online communities I've seen since I built my computer. However, where does one draw the line with an op's power? It's a sad day for CB when someone can be kicked while following all guidelines in place.

I'll see you all in the battlefields I suppose.

I was under the impression that we were allowed to use symbols in chat, even to replace an explative. there is a thread in the op forum somewhere about it. perhaps i should bump it for the ops to read again.

Why would you like to hide good words by using characters?

More importantly, how do you make sure i interpret it correctly, in your example i might have been thinking you meant an alternative word for cat, and that would have been bad.

When using PG words you have nothing to mask, so why using masking tactics to emulate bad behaviour, unless you want some association with the banned behaviour.

just my 2 cents.

I would like to think that people will see exactly what Dynomite is trying to say. With the idea plainly explained was the utilization of symbols for words. Plainly I ate some swiss cheese today, the idea was to put the symbols in place. Why would someone get booted for that. Perhaps more importantly, incidents by ops pers (with respect to being kicked off), dynomite, was indeed attempting to solve as incident and ensure clean, proper game guidelines where adhered to.
Additionally, everyone can appreciate the hours put forth by ops pers making this game what it is today. It is a thankless job and I for one think it is a fine game. Perhaps an individual such as dynomite is trying to uphold a belief and pehaps he would greatly assist CB2 by being an ops per. Gun, perhaps you might want to reflect on this and re-evaluate your decision. Leadership positions are frequently under review and commented on. I am sure dynamite may have some qualities available to enhance and effectively enable assistance to your job as an administrator.

Just my 2 cents....

I don't care to be honest but I do disagree with you this once Phaete and agree with dyno.
Dyno pointed out in chat before he put the *!*^# "what if it is a good word?" meaning he obviously wasn't going to use an expletive and I have seen Gun get the wrong end of the stick and kick pointlessly on many occassions in cb1.
But like I said I don't really care and don't expect any action to be taken either way as this was obviously a mistake and nobody should be punished just that Gun realise what he did wrong.

Shark February 20 2005 8:04 AM EST

Gun is a jerk and Jon likes to have jerks as chat ops...haven't you figured that out yet ?

AdminG Beee February 20 2005 9:57 AM EST

Bearded Dragon,

Drop the personal stuff, I've warned you on your use of forums before. 25k fine...

Shark February 20 2005 10:28 AM EST

"I've warned you on your use of forums before"..huh I think you are mistaken . ohh and I'm scared ohhh shaking in my boots like

Blarg February 20 2005 11:23 AM EST

Now bearded dragon, all chat ops are not jerks. As a good example, drudge fined himself a large amount for un-pg in new players. Would a jerk do that?

Tribute February 20 2005 11:28 AM EST

Blargasaurus, of course not.

It's just silly to act so calm about it!

Shark February 20 2005 11:57 AM EST

I didn't say all Chat OPS..stop adding lines to my statement

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] February 20 2005 12:03 PM EST

Woah let us all calm down.

I don't remember Shark being a bad boy in forum before but I could be wrong but Shark you know better than to jump back at the punisment you sat and watched me be an idiot like that before.

Let's just leave this and close the thread before trouble breaks out yes?

Max February 20 2005 12:25 PM EST

Bearded Dragon you are banned from forum use.

First, you did get real personal and second your comment to an admin about your fine. You may still not be "scared" but, you can't post, at least for a while.

Max February 20 2005 12:27 PM EST

Lastly, Gun wasn't being a jerk. Ever consider the fact that OPs and admins are human and make mistakes? Whatever the reason is I'll talk to him. And Dyno, c'mon. Is it that big if a deal?
