BUG: VA irregularity when minions die (in General)

Relic March 16 2005 12:51 AM EST

When fighting teams with multiple minions in melee combat rounds, I have noticed and verified that when a minion on my opponent dies VA is not triggered at all. This happens in the case of the battle not being over (25 rounds have not occured and there are still opposing minions with HP), and in the case of the last melee hit being the final blow of the battle. This is just one example, it happens all the time to me, but I wanted to bring it to your attention Jonathan.
Example:
Terror cast Antimagic Field on Tybzeecha (0.16)
Terror cast Vampiric Aura on Terror (?)
Terror cast Vampiric Aura on Dread (?)
Dread cast Haste on all friendly Minions (11149)
Iroers found no valid targets on which to cast Antimagic Field
Iroers cast Ablative Shield on all friendly Minions (12538)
Nofer found no valid targets on which to cast Antimagic Field
Nofer cast Ablative Shield on all friendly Minions (25078)
Pire found no valid targets on which to cast Antimagic Field
Pire cast Guardian Angel on all friendly Minions (?)
Tybzeecha cast Guardian Angel on all friendly Minions (?)

There should be a line for GA too, wouldn't you say? Combined with the fact that the second last hit returned far fewer HP, you should be able to conclude that the effect of these spells is based on HP as well as damage.

MrC [DodgingTheEvilForgeFees] March 16 2005 1:50 AM EST

VA has three ways of deciding how much HP it will give you.

1, Your damage.

2, Your VA level (it's level is maxed out at equal to the damage you do).

3, Your opponent's HP. Last I checked it was somewhere around 50% of your opponent's remaining HP that was your highest possible return. Meaning if he has 1 or 0 HP, your VA will do nothing.

[FireBreathing]Chicken March 16 2005 2:35 AM EST

meaning, you're just kicking a dead guy on the ground who has no more blood for you to leech.

So, Chuckles, with that logic the last round of melee should not give a VA HP regen. Whether or not it is the killing blow, you should regen HP with VA on the damage inflicted combined with the VA level trained. Any other way it doesn't make much sense in my opinion.

Some people might wonder if their understanding of the game needs updating in such a situation. Others, slightly more given to reason, might well even wonder if the current design could possibly have a basis in intentional design.

Not Glory: embracing change for its own sake, she boldly embraces the mantra, "Question everything," with its less well-known cousin, "and ignore anyone who tries to explain things because they're just fronting for The Man!"

Where would we be without courageous users like these? If their tireless efforts continue, perhaps someday we will yet greet glorious features like autotrain, equipment stealing, and AI opponents! Onward! Onward, brave souls! and heed not the catcalls of the unwashed naysayers, for they have imbibed deeply from the Koolaid of Oppression, and their only motivation is the spite that small minds hold for great ones!

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

To match Jon's poetic response.

Anyway,I thought there used to be a FAQ on why minions "beat a dead horse" (DD and physical), but I can't find it now.

Chuckles has it down. The simpler (?) answer is that the first hit (of the double hit) killed the minion. But since double hits aren't spread out (double hits always hit the same minion), the second hit is "beating the dead horse".. And you can't draw any strength, because, "He's dead, Jim."

'they have imbibed deeply from the Koolaid of Oppression'

I had a teacher at school who had a nervous breakdown because of all the stupid stupid questions we asked him day in day out, over and over again, term after term. His breakdown had been going on for some time, although we didn't know that and I guess we were just the last straw, not the real cause. On the last day of his time at school, when he had to be taken away, he stopped in the middle of a maths lesson and started telling us about the state of the world and our 'useless pitiful lack of contribution to anything approaching a decent society'. He then said that the signals from Mars were getting stronger and then burst into tears. He may have said something like the quote above as well....

Nice response Jonathan. My intention was to understand how VA works and if I had found a bug. Coders do make mistakes. I guess from now on I can assume that if I didn't play cb1 and haven't been privy to all the previous discussions and questions, that I will be thought heretical for questioning how something works ("Questioning Everything" as Jonathan puts it). It's good to know that such a free place of expression and discussion can occur. Thanks for removing any doubt I had about your take on your supporters and their questions/suggestions.
