Can you code / do you have a server? (in Off-topic)

Mythology April 23 2005 10:33 PM EDT

I'm looking to create a web game. I'd have liked to have roped Jon in but know he would have no interest in working with me :*(. That said, if anyone is interested please post or chatmail me.

What I require :
*An experienced coder that has about half a week spare, then 1 day per 2 weeks.
*Server space for at least 100K records (players / items etc) to start with and probably 1GB BW a week (less obviously to begin with).
*A tangible commitment to be made for at least a year.

What I offer :
* A game idea unique to the current batch. Though it incorporates RPG "leveling" aspects within it which means it is addictive and retains users.
* Game mechanics already all laid out, much in puesdo-code, over a month of work.
* Artwork to cover all the basics, though if CSS is used will need time to produce more. Plus artwork for most content (over 100 images).
* Information critical to the game set out clearly (lists, tables etc..(a week of work)).
* Clear income structure coming from; low level advertising, supportership and addictive items able to be purchased.
* Incoming traffic of at least 20 unique new visitors per day not including 3rd party advertising.
* I have a background in IT and Business though I am under no illusion that I do not have the coding skills to pull this off, though I can write clearly and briefly FOR a coder.
* I am prepared to work on this game as if it were a part time job even while it did not produce income to that level.

Remaining Information :
* Profits would be split 50-50 (i.e. after server costs).
* For Copy protection, the game name, art, information and mechanics would be under my name, the code and user base and everything else under the coder's.

If you are interested, then please get in touch with information about your skills and the server access you have / can get / costs. I'm going to put this up in a few places but I thought I'd start with CB as it means you have spare time, like web games and know the format I want to steal (joke! :p).

Thank you, Myth.

Hey Myth, I am interested. Please send me an email with a few of your ideas and if I like them we can talk further. I am a software engineer for a living. I have built many web application. Looking forward to your email.

Re : langauge, any that can run it basically, the game format is actually very flexible as the load on the DB is very low and infrequent. Plus no real time operations.

So basically anything that can hold about 7 different tables of records, once a day a large number crunching operation takes place and of course intergrates well with web format. I'm guessing php would be ideal but depends on the server...

Lukey, the basic framework should only take a couple of days to put up, after which I'd be looking for 10 Beta testers that can log on daily, you're welcome to be the first :)

If you are planning on doing this in php, count me out. php blows.

Myth, i would be intrerested in being a beta-tester, i can log on at least once a day!

Mythology April 24 2005 12:33 PM EDT

I didnt say I plan on doing it in anything, I said it is completely up to the coder / server platform.

Okay there's 3 possibles, more than I was hoping for / expecting to be honest :)

I shall be "pitching" the idea to the 3 now via chat mail to see how they like it. So hopefully if one of them is interested this will be the last post on this thread for a while. I'll let others who chat mailed me about beta testing know further down the line :)

Thank you again to all who responded.
