Xbox alternative to Tekken? (in Off-topic)

Fishead May 3 2005 3:38 AM EDT

My bro just bought me an Xbox and I need to find a way to make my wife love it. The only Video game she ever got into was Tekken. Does anyone know of a good Xbox equivalent?

Undertow May 3 2005 3:45 AM EDT

Maybe Dead or Alive? It's kinda set around hot chicks though.

Was Bloody Roar on that system?

chernobyl May 3 2005 3:49 AM EDT

Dead Or Alive 3 is really good and close to tekken 4 in play-ability, or so I hear. Haven't gotten to try either myself.
I have D O A 2:Hardcore for my P S 2 and it's what I play instead of Tekken 3 now. D O A has never disappointed me; of course, neither had Tekken until 4 hit =)
Pardon the crazy spaces, the spell checker gave me some trouble with the appropriate abbreviations (and the word play-ability)...

Chicks are allright. She just likes to kick butt on another player:) My brother said Dead or alive got good reviews, but he's really a Halo guy.

Soul Calibur II! It's essential Tekkan, but with medieval weaponry. Yoshimitsu's in it as well. I don't think it's the same Yoshimitsu as Tekkan, but the moves are pretty much the same. The XBox version lets you play Spawn, Todd McFarlane's cash cow, rather than Gamecube's Link from Zelda or PS2's Heihachi of Tekkan.

I can confirm that it IS the same yoshimitsu as Tekken. The fighting engine is completely different (Kick, defense, horizontal slash and vertical slash instead of LP, Right Punch, Left K, RK) but it is still an awesome game.

I'm a fan of Tekken, but if you want a whole new level of depth, check out Guilty Gear X2 #Reload. While it's a classic 2D fighter, it has wonderful artwork, unique characters and face-paced gameplay that is as simple or as complex as you make it.

Fark just posted microsites.ign.com/kfc/top99games/10.html for some site's Top 100 games and there is some debate in their forum as to the validity of such a list. But have a look in there for the top rated Xbox fighters. FYI, cute platformers with, say, a little dragon, rescuing furry animals always go down well with the girls too. /end sexism

Hey!

I love the Spyro games! (Granted, so does my wife!)

Well the original ones anyway. The later ones seem to lack the depth the orignals had, with the one before last (can't remember the name) being the worst by far... Luckily for us, I was killing the final boss again when (this was back in the wifes studio flat) her washing machine cut out the electrics during a boos fight auto save, corrupting our 99% save file.

Neither of us could be bothered to play it again after that...

:P

Thanks everyone. It looks like I'm leaning towards Dead or Alive. A little T&A for me and some pure martial arts fighting so my wife can slam me for gawking at the fighters:) It is pretty much pure fighting, isn't it?

Any other games out there that anyone really likes?

Undertow May 3 2005 10:43 PM EDT

After you fall in Love with DoA, you should SO get DoA Volleyball. It's just... wrong. But oh so right. Like it's dirty, but you love sitting in a pig pen don't you?

I can't say much about X-box, but I could pimp you PS2 games all day long.

I see people playing Dragon Ball Z @ school, it looks pretty cool. Looks similar to any other fighting game...lol.

Reebok May 4 2005 2:10 PM EDT

Soul Calibur is probably the best fighting game out there (and I know more than a few girls who love it), but I'd say Dead or Alive is pretty close to Tekken playability.

I don't know the wife's video-game skill compared to yours, but Soul Calibur might be the way to go hear. Soul Calibur works better for button mashing, while still allowing a player to grow in skill. Whereas in DoA the key is timing, a person who is good at video games can destroy (emphasis there) any casual gamer using only counters.

Overall they're both great games, my suggestion would be to rent both and see which one your wife likes more.

(on a side note, Soul Calibur 3 comes out later this year. /me dances)

Undertow May 4 2005 2:57 PM EDT

I've love taking out noobs in Tekken using only counters.

Fishead May 5 2005 1:21 AM EDT

So, I should get DoA and Soul Caliber! Can't argue that.

Good idea Reebok, I'll rent first. My wife likes to learn the special attacks and combos. She gets a few characters down and goes nuts. It's pretty amusing, we played for almost 7 hrs one night. She will barely give other games a once over.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] May 5 2005 1:31 AM EDT

I once played for that sort of time with my wife on super bust a move 2. I was always 1 or 2 games ahead of her, and she refused to let us go to bed until she'd beaten me...

The sucker I am just couldn't throw the fight! ;)

Undertow May 5 2005 3:42 AM EDT

I'm the same way about throwing fights. Can't do it. Friends that are noobs at specific games hate me, I just don't go easy. Kill, kill fast, dont' let up. I'm that way at anything I compete at.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] May 5 2005 4:39 AM EDT

I also love creaming my mate only using counters! I really winds them up!

Or using chain grapples!

When we have big tekken fests, we do team battles using random characters! :)

Undertow May 5 2005 5:15 AM EDT

I just can NOT do King's chain grapples, drives me crazy.

And counters in the arcade are so easy. I never look for the motion on screen, I listen for the clicking of his buttons. That's GREAT.

I never random, just not that good with 75% of the group. On Tag I'll use Hwrong, Yohshimitsu, King, Jin, Brian... that's pretty much. Maybe a random guy thrown in like Lee or Bruce or even ::gasp:: eddy. I hate that dancing (edited for non-pg, fined 25k ;) )

gooey muppet May 5 2005 5:28 AM EDT

And thats why i love eddie, just the metion of his name sends you into a fit.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] May 5 2005 6:22 AM EDT

GAHH!!! I had Eddy Fatboy soooo much!

*Grumble* Damn button mashers dream *Grumble*

But, at least there is a good representation of capoeria in a fighting game. I mean, Blanka does capoeria? Right...

I used to be able to get about 4 throws out on one of kings chain grapples, but I'm lucky to do 2 now! It's always the one that starts with the SS. I find the button config for the tohers too much of a pain to try! ;)

I loved the feeling of taking out 6 of my opponents random team with Gon! :)

But now, with T4 I'm a Steve fanboy. Plus he's English! WooT!

I can't wait to T5!

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] May 5 2005 10:39 AM EDT

It's a great matter of embarisment for me, as the friend in question never lets me forget this.

But.

After a night out clubing, waiting for my doner kebab in a local chip shop, both of us very drunk, this friend of mine beat me at streetfighter.

He was using one hand to eat a burger.

He beat me with one hand.

How he pulled off one handed dragon punches or fireballs I'll never know....
