Perfect explanations on exactly how spells work, and "Changelogs (in General)

Todd July 14 2005 10:24 AM EDT

I see a lot of posts that appear mainly in the changelog sections, but often in General looking for perfectly clear explanations of the changes and their effects. Perhaps people are wanting to know just how things work, how damage is calculated, etc etc.

Please, seriously, give it up already.

Jon has never, and will never completely explain his changes, or give you detailed formulae on anything in this game. . He says he leaves it up to you as players to figure it out, but only someone with either the genius or skills of a Jonathan could possibly figure these things out. Many people much smarter than I (almost the entire CB community :P ) have tried, and failed.

So, keep playing the game, oblivious to the true workings of the formulae. Like I said a few years ago.. shut up, sit down and just fight.

Eg: I admit I am out of touch with a lot of changes and posts, but we've all wondered exactly how Protection works. As a game player, would you not like to know? Sure you would. Several people have tried to figure it out, and to the best of my knowledge (again, it's limited), no one has figure out how the silly spell works at even the basest level. So? What to do? Shut up, Sit Down, and Just Fight. Know only this: Jon is smarter than you are. He's designed a game that is very specific and detailed in its calculations, but that need not worry you. Stop posting already! You will get information only as specific as this: Protection is a decent thing to have at at least base level.

Bottom line: According to Jon: you only need to get a feel of how the game works. You don't need the exact formulae.

Although this post sounds negative towards Jon and or the game, it's really not. I used to be ticked off at Jon for not sharing more information with the players on the workings of the game, but I gave up caring a long time ago. The purpose of this post is to share my opinions with you on how to enjoy the game if you get all worked up when you don't know how things work.

Well said Todd, well said...

I was just thinking today, "Haven't heard from Todd in a while."

Undertow July 14 2005 10:41 AM EDT

Now just add a:

"And if it's really broken, Jon will fix it, otherwise it's not really broken."

You don't need to post 50 times.

There are things that can't be workd out, like exactly how protection works or what type of Evasion UC and Gi's give and how they stack, all we can do is wait until Jon lets slip a little more info on these things.

But there are things we can work out.

Like the AMF formula. And I feel that any member of the community that wants to try and work these things out should be supported fully.

Sometimes our findings prompt Jon to change things.

Like the early Endurance bug, where it didn't work on anyone without Protection cast on them.

Unfounded statements that things weren't working weren't taken seriously. It was only when someone tested this, and backed up their claims with evidence that the bug was found and changed.

If we as a community had decided to just ignore this and keep fighting, maybe it would still be in effect today.

Nicely said Todd, it helps to just play the game. I try to do this most of the time because it's easy to let one thought lead to another. An interest in how something works can often lead to an obsession on maximizing it's effect. This is then followed by close comparison of yourself verses others, which in turn has one staring at the top ranks. Soon to be followed by an eye on a prize that only a few people can have by virtue of it's nature. This then leads to disenchantment, jealousy, complaining when things are changed (since you obviously just finished maximizing everything), and complete lack of any fun what-so-ever. Don't get worked up about it and remember that games are suppose to make you feel good and not cheated.

Then again once in a while Jon rains down confirmation of our careful observations, which are quite gratifying when coming from a man who often holds his tongue. Example

"And while you're at it, don't bother paying attention to the road on the way to work, just get there. Once you get to work, be sure not to tell your boss or co-workers anything."

Todd, your post is negative, period. I have rarely seen people get worked up and yet you're making it sound as if we, as CB players, shouldn't experiment, investigate, and collaborate on finding things out. I think it's great that Jon doesn't give out many exact numbers (due to the fact that there are some amazing number crunchers among our ranks), but that shouldn't mean we should all "shut up, sit down, and just fight." If that's the kind of mentality you're thinking we should all have, then I might as well take my time, planning, and strategy elsewhere.

Knock yourself out Brandon. Go ahead and try figure stuff out if that's what you want to do. If that's why you come to CB2, then more power to you.

If you've come to be the best of the best of the best (I love that movie), and you think Jon owes you explanations on the minutest detail so that you can play with Avoid-esque finese, then you might be disappointed.

That's all I was saying. I see a lot of posts that read like "Jon.. what exactly does that mean to me if I have AMF and AS?" etc etc.

Play the game, learn some of the formula yourself... that too hard for you? Todd musta got most of it figured out in CB1, but he's too much of a nub to do it again in CB2

I've figured out alot in CB2(by trial and error), its not too much different from CB1, and requres ALOT More dex I've noticed when you go with armor, Infact I think your way better off not even using armor, but just my opinion.

What exactly is protection anyways? O_o??????

You flame him, and then you give a question of the exact same subject that Todd posted this thread for and that you flamed for....whos the newb now?....Unless that was exaggeration...I'm not seeing it as such...lol

other things that would be very helpful is a discription of what tattoos do exactly and a store that sells them, I haven't seen any of them, I only find them in auctions, and I sometimes ask my Mentor what a specific tattoo does...

BrandonLP July 14 2005 10:28 PM EDT

I feel as if with your second post, and note that I have nothing against you at all, Todd, you came to your true point: people shouldn't _expect_ Jon to explain every little thing. I agree with you there. You original post makes it sound as if you want us to just be truly ignorant about the game completely and train random stats.

I think the whole post is a conspiracy to get everyone else but Todd to not pay attention to strat ;)

QBsutekh137 July 15 2005 1:02 AM EDT

Sefton, I need some details on that. What are you hiding?

:P

QBJohn Birk [Black Cheetah Bazaar] July 15 2005 2:19 AM EDT

Think about it, the posts in general aren't specifically steered towards Jon but towards anyone that will help them out. "Post to Public Record if you have a problem requiring help from an admin. The first admin to see it will take action. Please do not PM or chatmail admins individually; you will only be told to post to PR."
Remember that Jon is busy and thats why he has his Admins to watch everything while he can't.
