Problems with lag, help me? (in Off-topic)

No Viruses, no spyware, it just all of the sudden started lagging me out real bad, so I even un-intalled GUild Wars which took up 816 MB of space...didn't make any difference.

only thing that happened lately was I got my sound driver installed back into my comp...that shouldn't make it lag so bad.

thoughts?

Do you have LimeWire running?

[Banned]Monty August 1 2005 1:38 PM EDT

no, it's not even installed, it first started lagging a little bit when I installed it so I removed it.

try ctrl-alt-delete and look under processes for anything taking a lot of CPU space while you're playing. If you find anything, either end the process or uninstall it. And don't worry about the idle process at the bottom.

Sounds like spyware or a ton of active processes.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 1 2005 5:52 PM EDT

if you installed Lime wire, you have spyware, period.

Good luck getting it out, I suggest the same things everyone else does,
(spy bot and ad-aware) but also suggest you check out hijack this if you know what you are doing.

Actually, depending on the version, that could be incorrect, novice. Although Limewire embeds itself fair deeply into the registry, but I've got no unknown processes running and I use 2 spyware scanners religiously.

well does anyone know any decent Spyware removers?

right now I'm just using Adware and Norton for viruses

InebriatedArsonist August 1 2005 5:58 PM EDT

A) Update and run Ad-Aware, Spybot and whatever virus program you have. Can't hurt.
B) Check every active process, and Google any that seems suspicious.
C) If you know how to check your registry, do so.
D) If you have the resources to reformat, keep that option in mind.
E) Have you defragged the drive lately, or, say, ever?

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 1 2005 5:59 PM EDT

Brandon: I'm sure you are right, since I'm not a user of limewire. Every box I've ever seen limewire installed on runs like a dead dog, would have be a more accurate statement.

kill norton and DL AVG.

[Banned]Monty August 1 2005 6:04 PM EDT

thanks IA :)

I've tried AVG. and Norton, I think I might go back to AVG.

I've done the Spybot/Adware/Norton, a whopping 2 critical objects were found...I should run yahoo anti-spy forgot about that one.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] August 1 2005 6:12 PM EDT

when you are say adware monty, I'm assuming you are talking about Ad-Aware (by lavasoft I think)...there are a dozen or so imitators (only reason I ask). BTW, I always thought kindly of the spell check here, but today it's bothering me A LOT. having to do < nospellcheck > tags for every post simply because of proper names is lame.

[Banned]Monty August 1 2005 6:16 PM EDT

yes down with spell check! it didn't recognise Spybot, Spyware or Adware :P

anyway, yes Adware by lavasoft..."Ad-aware SE Personal" ;)
