Hope is an illusion. Pandora did not open the box a second time. There is only death, despair, and agony. Continue to fool yourself if you must, but in the end you'll see I'm right.

Your game does not support Firefox...

maulaxe August 8 2005 11:14 PM EDT

I call discrimination!

can we sue them for not supporting the one true browser?

Special J August 8 2005 11:32 PM EDT

It doesn't support Firefox because it requires active X

it is browser based, requires a download, uses an unsigned IRC applet, and requires active X.

No thank you.

Sevare August 8 2005 11:36 PM EDT

despite not supporting firefox (which i am a user of) they have a browser built to play it in their download section of their site. So its not completely horrable...

bartjan August 9 2005 1:42 AM EDT

Active X *is* completely horrible...

Genius [MoneyTalks] August 9 2005 5:18 AM EDT

Whats so wrong about active x??

[T]Vestax August 9 2005 5:34 AM EDT

This is from the first source I went to, so trust me you don't need to go far:

"The embedding of ActiveX into the Internet Explorer web browser created a combination of functions that has led to an explosion of computer virus, trojan and spyware infections. These malware attacks mostly depend on ActiveX for their activation and propagation to other computers. Microsoft has recognized the problem with ActiveX since 1996 when Charles Fitzgerald, program manager of Microsoft's Java team said 'If you want security on the Net, unplug your computer. ... We never made the claim up front that ActiveX is intrinsically secure.' "

--Wikipedia

Basically axtiveX allows for viruses and other nasty programs to easy access your computer even though they are limited to running only within the ActiveX scripting language. These light-weight scripting viruses are not as bad as say a real virus, but they are still quite the security issue.

Genius [MoneyTalks] August 9 2005 5:43 AM EDT

Oh, I see... But doesn't hotmail need active X scripting activated? So that means that many thousands of people have their security at risk right?...

Decius August 9 2005 9:51 AM EDT

Hello,

I am Decius, creator of Lands of Hope.

>>it is browser based, requires a download, uses an unsigned IRC applet, and requires active X.

It does not use an unsigned IRC Applet, it uses an unsigned Active X control, which is unsigned due to the fact I cant afford to blow 400 dollars on signing an OCX at the moment.

The Game does have a download, which is for the benefit of everyone, not only do images load instantly because you have them local it also reduces bandwidth usage for everyone (server included).

The game has thousands of graphics, which is something of a rarity for BBGs.

The game does not work in Firefox, for many reasons not just Active X.

If you use IE or use Forlorn Explorer the simple browser client I wrote to compliment the game you can play without enabling Active X by not turning Chat On.

The Chat Client is as secure as any IRC Client.

I'm surprised any of you turn your computer on in the morning, seems to me your scared of being attacked and no matter how safe you think you are there will always be someone who finds a way to bypass your security.

Lands of Hope is very secure and If you ever get past Browser Wars and try it, you might even like it.

Special J August 9 2005 10:38 AM EDT

It is not about browser wars or the inability to function without a tinfoil hat.

There are many ways to go about using IRC embeded in a webpage without using active X. We use a java version here, very light and very scalable, and it is open source.

Next, Firefox is following web standards, IE does not, if something works in IE and not in Firefox (and it is not active x) then you have other issues to deal with.

Your game may be great, but no thank you.

Good day.

>>There are many ways to go about using IRC embeded in a webpage without using active X. We use a java version here, very light and very scalable, and it is open source.

I used jPilot (also Java) with my previous game, it cost 49 dollars and had so many problems. It initially didnt support multiple chat rooms, it still only partially supports them and its implementation is clunky at best.

FH1 had 2 chat client, you could use the jIRC component or an HTML IRC Chat (coded by me) coded using OBJECTS (Winsock controls), obviously that was not ideal but it worked fine and had a number of features including multiple room support that jIRC did not.

Due to the fact I wanted to be able to interface the Chat with the user and make it more secure I switched it to an OCX.

>>Next, Firefox is following web standards, IE does not, if something works in IE and not in Firefox (and it is not active x) then you have other issues to deal with.

LoH is coded using dynamic html properties, something no other web browser supports because they all rigidly follow the standards.

I have no problems with standards, I designed the game for IE and IE alone.

If you dont wish to use IE thats your problem not mine.

bartjan August 9 2005 12:06 PM EDT

Where can I download this "Forlorn Explorer" for Linux?

Special J August 9 2005 12:16 PM EDT

Bart, you must get wine and use IE to play this game.

And that is _your_ problem, not his.

Since this has turned into finger pointing and problems, let me settle in.

You code your game for a crap browser, and only for a crap browser, then it must be a crap game.

And Sir!, that is your problem not mine.

Now, unless you have something to add to CB then bugger off _our_ game which works on all platforms, has a working non active X chat system and doesn't require a download so I can look at 10px by 10px images.

I pointed out the obvious problems and you took offense, again that is your problem and not mine.

It is not like I came to your forums and expressed My issues with your game, I did it here and you came to my turf. I always win on my turf.

Relic August 9 2005 12:21 PM EDT

<sarcasm>
/me can feel the love in this post. Can you feel it too?
</sarcasm>

Decius August 9 2005 12:25 PM EDT

Fine, dont worry I wont be back to CB ever again, you have already tarnished this game for me.

Relic August 9 2005 12:29 PM EDT

Don't let the virtual door hit your virtual ego on your way out. =) Thanks and don't come again.

Special J August 9 2005 12:35 PM EDT

I am not convinced you ever came here to play.
