Recommendations wanted for computer music set up (in Off-topic)

Ok, any musicians here in CB land? Using a computer set-up? I've been stuck at home with a very ancient PC that has absolutely no processing power whatsoever which is why I love CB. My home set-up has been a Roland digital multitrack, an old Yamaha RM1X sequencer/synth, a Korg Prophecy that I bought ten years ago and an old Roland sound module.

Now I have a decent computer about to come into my hands and I'm considering my options for using it to produce and record my tunes.

I used to use Cubase and Logic on occasion but apart from that I've lost track of the software side of music. So any recommendations - especially on the sequencing and soft synth side of things would be very useful.

So, if you're in the know on these things, best samplers, effects, and on the music side of things: soft synths to replace my Korg, and the Roland which is the old classic JV1080. I use a lot of squelchy synths and string pads.

With regards to sequencing and recording ease of use is key - remember that I worked a lot with Cubase - and also how well I can integrate my existing hardware set up into the mix too....

Thanks people!

I'd stick with Cubase if I were you. It's still a great piece of kit. If you have an old original, the upgrade path is quite cheap too. If not, CM me and I have an old original we could do a deal with.

As for the JV1080, why replace a classic? :o)
There are some great soundfonts around if your new compy has a Soundblaster card though. Cubase loves these too.

As a slightly out-of-date muso myself, I can't help feeling that some of the older equipment is still the best, especially with the warmer sounds that you seem to be looking for.

Thanks for the offer there. I'm not sure if I've still got the old software - I probably have, tucked away in my old boxes of disc back ups. If I can't find it I'll get back to you!

What's the guitar processing software like at the moment? Amp simulations were getting to the point where I couldn't always tell the difference between a simulation and a miked up amp?
