Networking problem..need help (in Off-topic)

i use a cable modem which connects to the internet. This modem is then connected into a 4-port router/switch (netgear rp614) (lets call it router 1) and configured so that any1 who connects to this router can use cable internet. Now, i recently added another router (same rp614 router) (lets call it router 2) so that one connection is separated into 4 (coz its 2 floors)...all can connect to the internet..problem is...i cannot go into the computers using router 2. does anyone know how to fix the problem? thanks.

Option 1: Use a switch, not router on router2 (easiest to do this is to connect router1 to router2 on the LAN end, you may need a crosslink cable for this)

Option 2: Set a static route on router1 for the network used by pc4 and pc5, pointing to router2.

thanks bart! router2 is also a switch..can u please give me a detailed instruction on how to do option 2? =)

You only need to do either one of the options. If you can get #1 working, that would be best.

See the manual of the router, almost all have an option to set static routes. If you tell me the IP numbers those PCs and routers use, then I could give you a more detailed explanation.

pc4 - 192.168.0.3
pc5 - 192.168.0.2

pc1 - 192.168.0.6
pc2 - 192.168.0.8
pc3 - spare

router2 - 192.168.0.7

Weird. That setup is not even supposed to work at all ;)
Try option 1 first...

wat u mean lan end? i think im using that setup now..netgear rp614 is a switch...^_^

It's a router with a 4 port switch, so I expect it to have 1 port 'WAN' and 4 ports 'LAN'.
If you connect the cables coming from PC4, PC5 and router1 all to the 'LAN' ports, and PC4 and 5 can still use the Internet, then those PCs should also be visible from PC 1 through 3.
If it doesn't work with this setup, then you'll need a crossover/uplink cable between router 1 and 2 instead of a straight one.

For the router2 to properly function as a router (for Option2) you'll want to keep cabling as is, but move pc4 and pc5 to a separate subnet. Use 192.168.1.x numbers for this LAN for example. Then you can add a static route in router1 for the network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 that points to 192.168.0.7.

This might be a dumb suggestion but have you gone back through and reconfigured all the computers to the new network setup? That is have you re-run the network setup wizard on all of the computers? I know that this has helped me in the past. Also have you just tried powering everything down, unplugging everything, and then reconnecting everything one-by-one?

thanks rshady..will try that too..^_^

bartjan..yes..4 ports lan..1 port wan...if i do connect pc4 and pc5 to router 1..then yes..i can use internet and share files...when pc4 and pc5 is connected to router 2 i can also use internet...problem is..i can no longer share files from pc1-3...i can only share files between pc4 and pc5.. how do u change pc4 and pc5 into a different subnet? change subnet mask of the 2 pcs? or the ip ad of the router? sorry for the trouble..^_^

The settings are mostly done on router2. If mostly default settings are used, then the PCs get their network configs from the routers via DHCP, so no changes on the PCs are needed (except maybe a reboot, so they find their new config a bit sooner).
