How do you ask for a haircut? (in Off-topic)

Ox [StephenMelinda Gates Fund] January 30 2006 8:46 PM EST

My hair for years has been kind of long, and I have always just gotten "trims", easy to order, easily delivered. But I have wanted short hair however I don't know how to go about asking for it. Do I just say, "short hair please"?

Maelstrom January 30 2006 8:51 PM EST

Don't do it! Don't conform!

[YG]Wildthing January 30 2006 8:53 PM EST

find what you like. 'Cause there are many different short styles

In most barbers the term 'skinhead' is used for an all over trim. Just ask for one of those.

hah..

What if I say "give me a James Dean"

QBPixel Sage January 30 2006 9:04 PM EST

You ask by saying, "Can I please have a haircut"?

jk =P

I don't know, maybe ask "Can you see if you can change my hair so its short compared to my current longer style?" or something to that effect.

James Dean = US Marine in barber slang!

It's a good idea to have a plan for what you want your hair to look like. If you go to almost any of the chain haircut places they usually have books with different haircuts for guys. Or you could always check out an online site like this one or this one. Once you have a sample, you could always print it out and show them. Then any stylist should be able to cut it right.

Or just ask the stylist, tell them you want a short cut and ask if they have any suggestions. I am sure they would be able to come up with something. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is actually the simplest.

If you have a friend that also has short hair, ask them how they ask. They may ask by length, like, "give me a 2"

Thanks for the responses, but I remembered it's pretty much free if I just cut it myself.

Ah, someone got a Flowbee for Christmas.

Maelstrom January 30 2006 10:15 PM EST

Wow, I laughed out loud when I saw that Flowbee thing. Crazy.

Stephen January 30 2006 10:42 PM EST

Yeah, I think that guy uses it on his moustache too.

Reminds me of Wayne's World when Garth is forced to try using it and he cries out that "it's sucking my will to live."

Go to a stylist instead of a barber. Stylists are more like artists, give them an idea of what you want, and they'll make you look good.

Mem January 30 2006 11:28 PM EST

I cut my own hair. It's the only way to go, if you don't mind looking silly at least. I don't.

#1 buy buzzer, buy the third one up from the cheapest.
