How important is it that I train protection into my charector kefeck. Or would it be better if I recruited another minion and put protection on him. Any suggestions would be of great help thanks.

not really important at all, it is just an option. It probably wouldn't even be that helpful, to be honest, splitting the exp like that.
On a side note, we in New Players would love to help you with questions like this. You should ask us sometime.
I would suggest to try and stay single minion until 100k but if you do hire another minion then put protection on him. If you do decide to stay single minion and plan on training protection then don't train it too high since you have a ToE which should provide good damage reduction at you mpr.
