Would it be possible to get the option to decide whether or not we are notified of new responses when we create a thread?

Great idea, but it's been suggested many times before, and it hasn't happened yet.
(Just think of the person who made the latest corrupt a wish thread!)

is this the notification via email? if so..there already is an option..check the 2nd option that says "notify me of responses" everytime you make a new thread..^_^
I do that. It just gets annoying the times I forget, only to log into GMail and have a dozen or so messages from threads I can barely remember posting :-P

Doesn't gmail lodge all the responses into one link? It does for me =D
Not all ;) Only the responses to the same thread. So for instance, if I hadn't remembered today, I'd have one email with several from this thread, then another from the HGs thread.
May seem like a minor annoyance, but its still an annoyance :)
