Make me a flyer for my bonfire (in Contests)

TheKing March 6 2006 5:39 PM EST

Ok, I want to make a flyer for a beach bonfire. Here what it needs: Title (Bonfire), the date, location, BYOB, some sort of text to promote the bonfire, time. It must be a word doc, be about half a page size and utilize one of the symbols pictured. You can alter the pics if you want, but the symbol needs to be noticable. I'd also like a picture of a fire of some sort on there. Perhaps like one of the pictures. I must also be able to open up the flyer in word and change things around. Reward for best flyer is 3,208 Slayer Bolts [18x3] (+3) 15,702 and a A Compound Bow [5x1] (+2) 2,191 . If this doesn't get any play, then I'll change or add to the prize. Here's the pics:

Ok, the new prize is 50k cb2. Just a simple flyer. The symbol, a bonfire and some text, but do be creative. :)

I would help but I know nothing of working with pictures.

Just a shameless bump... that I CAN help with.

What I was thinking was maybe just a picture of some small fire, like a camp fire maybe, up on top, with "Bonfire 2006" or something written above it. Then, the rest of the info written below. Then maybe try to put one of the symbols at the bottom... I don't know. Or else, maybe the fire could be a background and all the info would be written right on top of it. I was thinking that it would have to look good in black and white though so I could just xerox them. So, that's what I was thinking, but I was hopeing maybe someone more artistic or inventive might be able to help.

Prize is now 75K. (And maybe it might be easier to just put up a pic of your flyer and then I'll have the winner just e-mail me the flyer as an attachment)

85K?

You are asking people to do maybe an hour's work and offering them about 70c for their efforts.

Alright, I'd rather teach you how to fish I suppose. Here are some nice guidelines. This could be for you or you contestants.

1) Use as much of the page as possible. Go to the Printer settings and make all of the margins zero. Then try to close the settings pop-up and you will get a message. Say yes to having Word auto-correct the document's margins. Now you have the maximum space that your printer can provide.

2) Pick out the details. Its for an event. So it has a place, a time, a date, and a title. These must be readable in a glance with big letters that are easy to see. You can use "Bonfire" as your title and make it stand out. The idea is that in 2 to 3 seconds the person knows all they need to know..

3) Graphics are fun, but don't get carried away. The pictures can be a nice eye-grabber sometimes but don't let it be so grabbing that the person doesn't actually read the words on the flier. That also means that you should avoid overlapping graphics and text. The information itself is top priority, without that you have no reason for a flier in the first place.

4) Use bright colored paper if you can. Colors like bright yellow, green, blue, even purple and orange are good. I actually try to avoid solid red, since it makes black hard to see. yellow is my favorite. If you want to stick with colored pictures on paper then you really have no other choice then white, but for gray-scale, you better brighten things up somehow.

5) I hate word art. I try not to use it much. I think there is one very plain setting I use once in a while. The best thing is instead to get a nifty new font. Go to Google and type in 'free fonts' and pick out something you like and fits the occasion.

Another cool thing to do. Use black and white pictures (such as a symbol, hint hint) and then use the contrast and brightness features to make it faded. Make the picture big and in the center. Right click and send it to the bottom z level. Now you have a neat water color.

Note that because of 1 and 5 I don't really think it's a good idea that I do it for you. Note also that a flashy flier, like what stephen is thinking, takes longer and less effective then what I just outlined. To make an effective flier it takes me 5 to 10 minutes tops, not an hour. Any longer then that and your working too hard.

That's all I'll clue you in on for now. Good luck.

I'm more interested in that picture, what is that symbol?

"Burn her!?"

TheKing March 8 2006 3:04 PM EST

Thanks Vestax. That's what I was thinking too. I figured about 5 to ten minutes. I can make one myself, but I was thinking of just title, pic, location, directions. Maybe more like 2 minutes :D. I just thought maybe some people like doing things like this and might have some fun with it. Not a big project. Probably only about 30 flyers will be made. It is for Tau Beta Pi, and engineering honors society. We are trying to get to know the members so we thought a bonfire might be a good chance to socialize. I didn't want to do this project, but I was one of the only people at the meeting, so I got picked (our chapter is very small).

ANYwho, final prize value is 100k. Try something if you like. Thanks for all the input!

TheKing March 8 2006 3:23 PM EST

Oh, and a page would be too big. Just about half a page, like the flyers they hand out at colleges for toga parties or keggers. I think I like the second symbol better too. The one with the blue background. What Vestax said would work. The symbol faded and big as a background. Not sure where to put the pic of the fire... I wouldn't want it to cover too much of the symbol.

But if you have a better idea, then do it and let me see :D .

P.S. 100k is about $1.40. If you're any good, then you can whip up a nice flyer in five minutes. That's close to $17 an hour. Or, if you prefer, 100k buys you ammo for a week :D.

Removed your duplicate post for you.

Also note that 1/2 sheets are bad as pass outs, and not very economical either. 1/4 or 1/6 sheets are better.

TheKing March 9 2006 1:04 AM EST

Thanks vestax for removing the double post. Not sure what happened there! As for the size, the sheet is only 8.5 x 11. 1/6 would be like a business card. You think half a page would be too much?

[T]Vestax March 9 2006 1:35 AM EST

Business cards are 3½ inches by 2 inches. Everybody knows that. :P

¼ letter size (5½ inches by 4¼ inches) is the standard. This is also affectionately known as the "quarter sheet". The process of handing out these fliers is known as "quarter sheeting". These terms are so standard they are often used in official campus documents in many universities and colleges across the nation. These documents usually outline the campuses policy on posters and fliers.

One last thing, yes, half sheets are too big for hand outs.

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] March 9 2006 1:38 AM EST

I like a good halfsheet, myself.

[T]Vestax March 9 2006 1:44 AM EST

Well, I suppose its hard to argue with that. Yet, I stick by my claims, if not for me then for the trees. Somebody needs to look out for them.

TheKing March 9 2006 8:01 PM EST

wow, its seems like you know a lot about this vestax! I bet you could have whipped up something right nice in the time you've spent just posting in this thread. /me cries . Oh well. I do appreciate the input though. Looks like it's up to me. lol, I'll teach them to "volunteer" me for projects! muwahahaha!! >{:)} (note the devil horns and gotee, NOT happy me trapped in a television) :D
