Spellchecker (in General)

Vicious Cat April 2 2006 6:12 PM EDT

Is there any chance of making the spellchecker any more 'interactive'?
An 'Add to Dictionary' kind of thing which, even if it has to be humanly modded, after a while the work to maintain it would diminish to almost nothing.
I just get slightly peeved when an absolutely genuine word gets nuked.

Maelstrom April 2 2006 6:18 PM EDT

That would be way too easily abused, or too difficult to maintain.

But it's a pretty good idea :)

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] April 2 2006 6:28 PM EDT

I like the spellchecker as it is. It's kind of like playing the lottery: what perfectly-legitimate, utterly-benign word will it deny me today?

Vicious Cat April 2 2006 6:36 PM EDT

I'm not sure where the abuse could go, and as I said, maintenance would decrease over time.
It just seems such an obvious thing...

Special J April 2 2006 7:19 PM EDT

It would be abused by people adding words that do not exist?

It's not like people can be trusted with something like that, look at the idiots who try to play wiki edit all the time.

AdminG Beee April 2 2006 7:23 PM EDT

I'd abuse it and get rid of every word that the Americanz corrupt with a "zeee"

SNK3R April 2 2006 7:24 PM EDT

Yeah, and I'd abuse it and take all those unneeded 'u's out of your crazy language. :P

Stephen April 2 2006 7:32 PM EDT

Special J, The bit where you wrote "who try to play wiki edit all the time" was superfluous!

{CB1}Lukeyman April 2 2006 8:46 PM EDT

Why not just forward all the posts to Bast?

RAMPAGE April 2 2006 8:53 PM EDT

Shhh Quiet CICC don't give them ideas. =)

QBJohnnywas April 3 2006 6:17 AM EDT

We should rename it 'spell chucker'.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 3 2006 7:03 AM EDT

LOL!

We could (could we?) have the edits viewable and reverseable like the wiki?

Then I could add humour to it! :D

QBJohnnywas April 3 2006 7:12 AM EDT

Did you not just get spell-chucked for using the word 'humour'?

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] April 3 2006 7:13 AM EDT

GL automatically <nospellchecks> all his posts, top to bottom, hadn't you noticed?

QBJohnnywas April 3 2006 7:18 AM EDT

I had noticed. The tags are becoming GL's signature instead of ;).

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 3 2006 7:22 AM EDT

Oh yeah!

html br and nospellcheck are your friends! :D

I couldn't post this message without them! ;)

Why bother to go through the pain of correcting the mistakes, when you can just nospellcheck them away! :D

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] April 3 2006 7:34 AM EDT

And there's something wrong with reading them for fun, GL? o.O

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] April 3 2006 7:35 AM EDT

I don't know how that happened. :P

QBJohnnywas April 3 2006 7:40 AM EDT

I've just had a vision of Bast running a special computer program that takes huge chunks of text and changes correct spellings to incorrect spellings.

Cue insane grin and hours of fun for Bast....

YNM April 3 2006 10:20 PM EDT

Woot for 1337 not getting checked!!!

And...um the word woot...

Flamey April 4 2006 2:29 AM EDT

i think i would like the dictionary to acknowledge that many words have the letter "u" in them. e.g. armour, favourite.

now i have to use nospellcheck to spell in the english language.

bartjan April 4 2006 12:07 PM EDT

Everyone already has the option to add a word to the dictionary. If you want to add some humour to the dictionary, then go to Settings->update and put that word into the 'name' field. ;)

Maelstrom April 4 2006 12:19 PM EDT

Great idea Bart! Perhaps I'll change my name to Armour!

(actually, when you capitalize the A, it doesn't get tagged as being incorrectly spelled!)

QBBarzooMonkey April 4 2006 12:28 PM EDT

Cool! I'm going to be Horrific Mulled Extraordinaire! :)

Maelstrom April 4 2006 12:32 PM EDT

Mulled or Mullet?

QBJohnnywas April 4 2006 12:32 PM EDT

That'll be the Horrible Mullet Millionaire.

QBBarzooMonkey April 4 2006 12:34 PM EDT

Mullet makes it past the spellchecker, which is in itself a horrific thing. ;)
