all you should need to set it up is a routing number and bank account number, then you'd need to veryify the account by entering in the amounts that paypal sent to your account < $1

make sure you have the bank account as the primary, not the credit card; I made that mistake myself when I forgot lol

Sign up for paypal and click 'cancel' (or similar) when it asks you about a credit card.

I believe most European banks allow for free bank transfers between accounts in Europe, so if it's a one time payment you want to make, then you could ask someone within Europe and who has a working bank<->paypal link to help.
You would then transfer the cash to their bank account, and they then should transfer the same amount to your paypal account.

In my experience banks do not allow anything for free. It used to cost me a fortune to transfer money from one account to another between the UK and France.
Then again, it was a few years ago and involved the UK which does not support the Euro.

I'd check the costs carefully before transferring from one account to another across borders as the charges can be quite high.

thats an idea bart but can you really trust ppl when it comes to real money?

bartjan May 17 2006 10:07 AM EDT

Regulation (EC) No 2560/2001 of the European Union dictates that the charges for cross border transfers (within EU of course) shall cost the same, as a transfer within the country would cost, since July 1st, 2003.
As far as I know, all banks in my country don't charge anything for bank transfers done by consumers, so that would also apply to transfers to other EU countries. Although a bit in denial, even the UK is an EU country ;)

Typical ! I spent 24 months from April 2001 to April 2003 being hammered every month as my salary was transferred from the UK to where I was living in France at the time.

C'est la vie je pense.

Note: PayPal members from Australia and the European Union cannot transfer funds from a U.S. bank account to their PayPal account.

guess ill ask a friend in Holland to transfer some money to my bank account, btw does he have to make a paypal account to do that?

bartjan May 18 2006 6:40 AM EDT

Yes, he needs to have a paypal account to do that.

By the way, the country is The Netherlands, not Holland.

AdminG Beee May 18 2006 6:53 AM EDT

Funny foreigners, don't know what their country is called.

/me cringes in anticipation at the thought of the inevitable and ultimate put down, followed by a deluge of supporting urls ;)

bartjan May 18 2006 7:07 AM EDT

Saying that I'm from Holland is just as wrong as saying that G Beee is from England ;)
Holland is only the west part of our country, just as England is only a part of the United Kingdom (or Great Britain, always forget what the difference is between those 2).

Angel of Death [Hell Blenders] May 18 2006 8:20 AM EDT

we say both Holland or Netherland but Holland is shorter so i write Holland for Bart only: jullie zeggen toch ook wij hollanders
