Overpowered? ;) (in General)

QBJohnnywas June 22 2006 9:56 AM EDT

I do like discussing new additions to the game. There are several of us who, it would seem, take a side of a fence and stay there. Some of the strat/gameplay discussions probably go on for twice as long as they should do! But it's fun and almost always informative. I learnt most of how I play the game from posts like those. I will name names here and cite MrChuckles, GL and Shade as people who helped my own ideas along in the early days and add Sefton, Sut and Novice as people who have set my mind thinking along the way. Many more besides but these guys stick in the mind mostly due to that take a side of a fence and stay there attitude!

Anyway rambling here...

I got to thinking a moment ago about how new skills/spells/items always seem to go through a phase of 'overpowered' rants/discussions and sometimes Jon agrees and adjusts and other times things just become part of the fabric.

So I was thinking about the existing ingredients and how people would respond if they were new and introduced today?

What would GL - for instance - make of Ablative Shield if it was a new addition? A spell that only requires xp investment on one minion but gives HP to all minions; giving an unfair advantage to those teams made up of three or more minions. :(

How about the Morgul Hammer? Hits for massive damage and has vampiric aura built in. So not only can you kill more people but you get free HP thrown in! :(

And the Tulwar? A weapon with the uncanny ability to summon GL from wherever he is and bring him to CB. Deadly in the wrong hands! :P

I offer this for your own pondering:

I've been thinking about the concept of "overpowered" lately. The shout usually occurs (more often than not) when 1 individual player has trouble beating 1 individual character that they thought they shouldn't have trouble with, analyzes why it's happening, and decides on one factor that they label "overpowered".

After much forum discussion, we end up with people on both sides of the issue, but the basic conclusion is always that the player with the "hard to beat" character simply found a very effective way to use said "overpowered" item/skill/spell in their strat.

So I ask, is anything ever really "overpowered"? Or does the cry arise simply because a good strategist found a way to use that item/skill/spell to its utmost potential? Like Johnny mentioned, I have no doubt that if the Morg never existed and was introduced today, it would be labelled "overpowered" in no time! Instead, it's a staple of the game that "all the best tanks are using..."

And the Tulwar? Pffft!

AS is fine. It adds HP to all minons, but to off set this, take a penalty to effect for each minion in the team. :) Balanced, doesn't make HP redundant, and has it's own counter (DM).

MH is different. You don't ballance a wepaon with rarity. It gets the best upgrade costs, has one of the best damage potentials and an non reducable VA aura! Overpowered indeed. But then I think a lot of the wepaons are redundant anyway.

Tulwar? Hehehehehe!

I can tell you exactly how people would react to AS ; )

July 31st, 2003. Ablative Shield was added to the game.

I have to say, the whole idea of a tattoo that reduces damage on all the minions of the team seams frighteningly overpowered

QBJohnnywas June 22 2006 12:19 PM EDT

Lol, the ToE has always been overpowered, he said whispering incase Jon heard while it's still changemonth....

Roenall June 22 2006 12:37 PM EDT

TOE is the TAT to use it so strong that most TOE tank stalemate each others.Only MM seem to be good vs TOE.

deifeln June 22 2006 2:57 PM EDT

And Magic Missle WITH a ToE just plain rocks!

IndependenZ June 22 2006 5:02 PM EDT

Would I dare to say something about the defensive DX and inert Evasion of UC in this thread?

Roenall June 22 2006 5:22 PM EDT

Ah the miracle of UC none can explain it but it sure there.

QBBarzooMonkey June 22 2006 5:28 PM EDT

Did you know that a year ago, I was getting ridiculed for using UC? Now it's an overpowered miracle? But I guess the irony of that is the original point of this thread...

:P

Roenall June 22 2006 5:37 PM EDT

well you get me wrong here barzoo. What i have say before is UC does not work the way it should. It a weak skill they could need a little dmg boost but right now it a almost impossible physical wall to kill with a tank unless it a TOA tank.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] June 22 2006 6:09 PM EDT

Roe: I really don't see how that's true...a little dex and a +100 hammer do just fine.

Roenall June 22 2006 6:17 PM EDT

a +100 weapon give about 30% chance to hit
