Dead crabs? (in Off-topic)

So I went to Titusville, which is just west of Merritt Island, upon which NASA's Kennedy Space Center is located, yesterday. July 1st was supposed to be launch day for STS-121 Discovery, going to the International Space Station to help complete construction. Unfortunately for me and my fellow compatriots, we were all disappointed on account of weather off the coast of Spain-- the emergency landing point for the Discovery shuttle. Of course, it was delayed again today, July 2nd, because of bad local weather. I'm hoping to be able to make it out on July 4th, the next scheduled launch day.

Anyways, here are the pictures I took this past Saturday:

Hopefully you'll get to see the pictures from an actual shuttle launch on Tuesday evening. Dead crabs, helicopters, and horribly small pictures of ground-bound shuttles aren't exactly the most titillating subjects...

How does NASA create those labels in the sky? Is it smoke or some sort of laser?

It was definitely lasers.
