Thought I'd share this little lot with you. It's a while since I did a what I'm listening to at the moment thread.
We appear to be having a summer in London this year. A lot of last year just disappeared into a drizzly mess. So, I've been sorting out the garden, (just in time for the rain to kick back in) and listening to some very summery sounds.
Lily Allen. Lily is the daughter of actor and comedian Keith Allen and she's everywhere you look at the moment in the UK. Her album comes out on Monday and is already set to be Number One on advanced orders alone. Musically she's a mix of The Streets and The Specials, ska/reggae grooves with really really good lyrics. She half sings, half speaks and the whole package just sounds like the best summer soundtrack ever.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs I lost my copy of their first album until recently when I managed to find it tucked behind a cupboard. My wife swears she didn't hide it...anyway their track Maps has been on repeat.
Camille (the album Le Fil) Camille is a French singer songwriter. This is her second album and it's her, a double bass and a little bit of percussion. But the sound is huge. Hundreds of multi tracked vocals all by Camille, the usual harmonies but she also impersonates a brass section on one track and her voice makes up the rhythm track which sounds like she was growling and meowing like a cat. It's somewhere between Prince, Kate Bush and Bjork.
A couple of years ago Camille sung on an album by French band Nouvelle Vague - acoustic latin jazz versions of Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Public Image Limited and other punk classics. Very smooth, very summery.
The Pipettes - The Pipettes are female singing trio from Brighton Uk. They're like a forgotten classic girl group from the Sixties, dressed in matching polkadot minidresses with really catchy tunes, like very old Blondie produced by Phil Spector. The sort of songs that sound like they should be on old vinyl 45's in a dusty shop run by an aging hippie.
The summer will probably disappear after next week so I'm going back into the garden now. :)
