Some people do leave their chat on a lot of the time even if they are not at the computer. And, if they have their settings set to receive chat mails in chat, then it's almost instantaneous that they receive your chat mail. It's possible this was the case.

Other than that, waiting patiently for a reasonable amount of time (about 24 hours or so) for a response is definitely considerate. Some people aren't just as quick to login as others. :)
