What's the best way to deal with an enemy without taking damage?

Besides butterflying its sort of hard to not take damage. When you have your gun out and you double tap your directions keys you should be able to roll and shoot. Thats pretty effective especially if you can aim and roll. Without butterflying i could usually own all but the semi decent butterfliers before I had to switch to butterflying.

You mean jump, dash and slash?

yeah that, except when you're slashing you should be changing to your gun and so it shoots quickly and then you already have your sword out blocking the shots. If you can do it well, it's hard for them to hit you because you're continously dashing and since you're sword will be blocking.

What if the enemy is a long-range only fighter?

Get in close by dashing, go around the other side, forget about him, or just shoot him long range with a rifle.

Just so you guys know. Butterflying is not where you shoot. It's where you just dash around slashing and blocking really fast. Most people switch off between slash shotting and butterflying. Slash shot is where you jump dash change shoot change. :-D.
