Magic Missile?

Your Monk needs the melee rounds to be effective. Firebal will only hurt you there, so forget about that one. CoC can help you a great deal, but that's only in melee. So why not use MM? It hits in all ranged rounds, attacks from the rear (where most damage dealers are) and will not harm you in melee. Perfect? Cone of Cold will do a lot more damage though. But the advantage of being able to take out some minions in ranged or in the beginning of melee is, to my opinion, worth more than doing more damage later on.

I'm using a similar strat with enchanter, enchanter monk, mage. CoC all the way with heavy armor. Works very well.

That is sort of what my strat is. I have a UC minion that can do o.k. damage and melee and he dodges some attacks. I have a MM mage in case the opponent is using ToE because it does the most damage to a minion.

decay, it allows your Monk to actually kill the tanks he's dodging...

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that.

If you are starting from scratch, MM until your UC monk is strong enough to make a difference (about level 30-40), then switch to decay for the reason that novice mentioned. If you have one, put an AoI on him when you switch to decay...

I also might suggest staying single minion till 100k mpr for the monk, then hiring the mage, then the chanter later.
