Firefox Microsummaries (in Off-topic)

Have you all seen this new Firefox feature? It lets you add a piece of code to Firefox that gives you the option of making a one-element RSS feed out of a link.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, here is an example.

1) I add the special microsummary code for carnage blender.
2) I bookmark the "active threads" page, except on the bookmark dialog, the "title" of the bookmark has a drop down list box, I click it and it shows all the "live titles" for the web page.
3) When I look at the bookmark in my bookmarks, it shows a piece of text from the actual active threads page instead of it just showing the non-changing title of "active threads" as the title of the bookmark.

For those of you who STILL don't understand it, here is what it does, visually.

What I'm interested in, is how can CB use this? Can you guys think of a cool way to use this on CB?

Here is walk-through on making them. And here is the mozilla site about them.

Cool, I just played with this, and I made a simple little microsummary!

It displays the current top clan on CB. This rocks!!
Check it out here.

You are having way too much fun with this stuff :P

AdminQBVerifex October 30 2006 4:54 PM EST

Hey, I'm trying to find something to do, shush!

NOTE: This requires Firefox 2.0 *smile*

Gotta love easy-to-use dynamic content...

Could you make a generator for current BA? What elements can be gathered into the microsummary (too lazy to read) *smile* A microsummary of how much BA has accrued would rock my pants.

th00p October 30 2006 4:58 PM EST

*ALERT*: You have accrued over 140 BA! Get your tail to CB quick before time runs out!

hehehe

AdminQBVerifex October 30 2006 5:29 PM EST

D'oh, can't get the current BA. Unfortunately the current BA is generated on the "home" page and Firefox microsummaries don't play well with redirects like that.

How frequently are those updated? How much extra traffic does this cause?

AdminQBVerifex October 30 2006 5:44 PM EST

I'm not sure bartjan, none of the dox I've read say anything about the update frequency, I wonder if the XML lets you specify the update time? Hmm, anyways, too bad I can't pull the current BA :(

So each user has to manually install the code to add each microsummary to each page? Might be neat, but sounds like WAY too much trouble to me. Can't it be automated on the server side, so that when you bookmark a page, you have the option to use the microsummary?

AdminQBVerifex October 30 2006 8:44 PM EST

I think you can Maelstrom, I read on the page that you can. But I'm not sure if you can do it by default, I think you might have to "install" them first, but I did read something about sites having a way to set them up so bookmarks automatically do that.

Maelstrom October 30 2006 8:48 PM EST

Yeah, I saw that. Guess it'll take a little while for sites to get with it ;)
