AVG Antivirus Free
This is very good and free I have used this for years never had any problems.

AVG AntiSpyware Free
This also is good it is new from Grisoft and so far so good.

Ad-Aware
This is great I have used this in conjunction with Spy Bot for quite some time and works great.

Spy Bot
This is great use it in conjunction with Ad-Aware and almost always takes care of business

The best AntiSpyware was bought out by Microsoft a year or so ago. It was called Giant AntiSpyware it was the best but Microsoft bought them out and redit it to the Windows Defender and it is awful now.

I don't have any great suggestions for firewall I use Microsoft's built in firewall and it works fine for me. I have heard of people using Zone Alarm and it seams to be very popular so you can try it here is the link, and of course it is free also.
Zone Alarm

Thank you DAWG, and any1 else that would think to post help here. I love this community in CB. I ask for help, and people jump to it. I hope to become a well-known, and productive member of the CB community, myself. Remember the name 'Hatchetman' :-)

DAWG November 15 2006 11:06 AM EST

oh yeah and forgot to mention that the AVG AntiSpyware is not completely free it is a 30 day trial but it works... woops didn't notice that usually avg doesn't put their trail stuff on in the free part of their site...

The Death Company [...] November 16 2006 2:48 AM EST

yeah i had giant (think it was on afree trial) and it was ace before it ran out, didnt know microsoft had brought it out

currently (im a cheapskate) using 'avast' (i dont know how to do links) but do a google - its free and its won some awards (not a clue how many or how good that makes it)

AdminNightStrike November 27 2006 1:16 PM EST

The best spyware / malware software is prevx. So far, it's the only thing out there with zero known holes.

DAWG November 27 2006 5:13 PM EST

but it ain't free....

QBsutekh137 November 27 2006 5:30 PM EST

Hm, AVG is in the anti-spy-ware game now? I love their free anti-virus and recommend it every chance I can... Thanks for the tip, Dawg!

"Spybot search and destroy

AVG Free

Zone Alarm"

What I use! ;) I bought Zone Alarm though, as you need the full version to support ICS.

(I also run Ad-aware alongside Spybot)

AVG Free is only free until January next year, after which they are going to change it to be a pay service.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] November 28 2006 11:03 AM EST

Well then, it's time to let them know that's the dumbest thing they could do...

How bad at management do you have to be before you get to destroy companies with choices like that...practically worse the krispy kreme stocking grocery stores with lousy stale donuts.

AVG got the odd little chunk of market share it has because it's a usable free program, forcing people into the same setup as mccrappy, or suckmantech is just sad...

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] November 28 2006 11:08 AM EST

I think I'll just use the payed for AV on Zone Alarm then...

AdminG Beee November 28 2006 11:12 AM EST

Usable free programs don't pay the mortgage.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] November 28 2006 11:19 AM EST

They do if you're smart enough Beee...M$ became what they are because it was easy to pirate windows for years...

The transition is the trick, for AVG, they simply have to take the market share the quality of the product has gotten them, and offer enough extra service so as to get a certain percentage of folks to cough up a bit of cash. But don't destroy a word of mouth marketing behemoth by charging for a product you used to actually CALL free. AVG is what I call it, but when I tell people to look it up on google, I always say "AVG FREE"...

I suppose everyone has to start sucking at some point.

AdminG Beee November 28 2006 11:24 AM EST

Anyway, I thought they were still offering it free next year. Maybe I'm wrong...
