An awesome music video by Muse... (in Off-topic)

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 23 2006 10:33 PM EST

I had just recently discovered the awesome band Muse, which I actually liked enough to replace my previous favorite band, The Vines. I was searching on YouTube for some of their videos and I came upon this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=l6-AnqATZa0. My second time viewing it, I absolutely loved the song, but it takes some growing into. But the video is the most psychologically disturbing and demented I've seen. Some may even call it scary. Not the common term of scary like a ghost or a lion in your closet or a serial killer, but at least for me, the figures in the full-body costumes leaves an imprint on my mind something which resembles fear.

Although there is a funny part in the video at 2:03 where the fat owl suit thing is flapping/dancing.

muon [The Winds Of Fate] November 23 2006 10:45 PM EST

Yeah, they aren't bad (though I haven't heard much of their stuff, just the songs that hit mainstream like Butterflies and Hurricanes, which I really liked).

As for music videos, what are our favourites? Personally, I love the dark humour and storyline behind Last Cup Of Sorrow from Faith No More...

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 23 2006 10:58 PM EST

Have you heard "New Born"? That's probably my favorite song from them.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] November 23 2006 11:19 PM EST

I'm likin that song Time is Running Out

Slashundhack [We Forge Our Own Stuff] November 23 2006 11:29 PM EST

(psychologically disturbing and demented I've seen.) Oh Opvines you delicate flower. Come to my dreams but tread lightly and armour your mind the teeth of past hells await. He He heeeee!

Hyrule Castle [Defy] November 23 2006 11:35 PM EST

On the topic of music videos. i think u guys who liked muse should check this one out.

I found it while watching halo 2 videos.... its a fairly good song, and about the best planned out video out so far for halo2... check it out

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLu8RT7-xb4

and the spell checker is taking parts of the words of the url and saying that they are not words. fairly weird...

/me needs to learn to use <no spellcheck> tags.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 24 2006 3:17 AM EST

I've heard the "Monsters" song before. I'm not a big fan of it. I'm not a big fan of Matchbook Romance in general.

And Slash, I'm talkin' music videos. Most music videos don't evoke fear. The only other music video that I can remember that's scary is Michael Jackson's "Thriller".

Slashundhack [We Forge Our Own Stuff] November 24 2006 1:22 PM EST

I suppose I was just picking on you Opvines .I don't get scared by much movie wise any more and it stuck me as funny.Oh and I can see you being scared of Mikey but that video? I don't get it?!!

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 24 2006 2:30 PM EST

The figures are so bizarre and grotesque that it evokes fear. Well maybe not fear, but something definitely like fear. The lack of light and red doesn't really help either.

kevinLeong November 24 2006 5:36 PM EST

by far the best Muse song on the CD... http://youtube.com/watch?v=jV1bRfLHA3A

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 24 2006 5:56 PM EST

I don't agree. That song sucks.

Drama [Just for fun] November 24 2006 6:28 PM EST

OpVines, I think you've mis-spelled, that song's rocking. :)

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 24 2006 6:44 PM EST

Knights of Cydonia? Really bad song... Really bad.

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] November 24 2006 6:49 PM EST

First time I heard the song I thought it sucked real bad, i think it just takes time growing into you. Thats what it did for me, and the song rocks soooo much now:) Matter of opinion though, heh.

THe clip is even better, I just love the concept of a Space-Western-Kungfu flick...

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 24 2006 9:24 PM EST

I've listened to it quite a few times. I don't find it enjoyable to listen to. And by that, I mean I'd rather stab myself in the head with a lint roller.

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] November 24 2006 11:44 PM EST

I can't stand Muse full stop, the only song you'll get me bearing is Time Is Running Out but any other song is awful.
The new album especially sounds like they want to be like Scissor Sisters.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 25 2006 12:28 AM EST

Really? You don't even at least like "New Born"? It's such a cool song. Well, the voice isn't something I'm a fan of, but the instrumental parts are incredibly energetic and make you want to punch the nearest person in the face.

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] November 25 2006 1:05 AM EST

The way they play the instruments is so amateurish.
For a start, real bands don't try show off with finger tapping solos, I've never seen Metallica do one live, why should some crappy modern band like Muse do it?
The only bands that show off with finger tapping, long fast solos or playing their guitar behind their heads are ones with absolutely no real talent, and especially don't deserve to be one of the top bands in the world.
Listen to some proper Old School punk music, simplicity works so much better than anything else, the only technical part of punk is the drums, but even then that is more attributable to modern stuff.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 25 2006 1:50 AM EST

Yes, I like your logic. Because they can play instruments and show off, that must mean they can't play at all. And while you might think Muse is crappy, I think Metallica sucks pretty hard. Since when have Metallica become the standard for live rock performances? Simplicity is better some of the time, but does that mean everything that has a side of complexity is trash? No, it doesn't.

muon [The Winds Of Fate] November 25 2006 3:09 AM EST

Zoglog: you have got to be kidding me!

Van Halen - Eruption, anybody? Or Hot For Teacher? That whole song was based around the mega tapping solo Eddie wrote.

And EVH was one of the most inventive and brilliant guitarists of all time. Amateurish? Ptosh and nonsense for sure!

What about some of DragonForce's solos. Herman Li plays piano with his guitar; Chen Lui-esque solos are all through his music.

Billy Sheehan? Most of his bass solos are based around tapping techniques. Seeing Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan battle in a tap off can still blow my mind.

But, Muse definitely could use some attitude readjustment...

muon [The Winds Of Fate] November 25 2006 3:11 AM EST

Addendum: if Hammett could tap and play guitar behind his head, he would. Jimmy Page and Steve Vai can't _both_ be wrong :-)

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] November 25 2006 9:44 AM EST

I'm not saying all bands that do it are but the recent trend seems to mostly be of bands showing off.
And it is just my opinion, I don't mind you liking it but I'm just not a fan of a lot of bands being "technical" these days.
I'm not a huge fan of Hendrix or Satriani either but at least they played good music which was properly based around a solo guitar so it needed that extra something special.
But when bands like Dragonforce come out with songs that are purely based around 3-4 minute solos which in my opinion don't fit into a song full of cheesy lyrics very well seemingly just for the sake of it then I'm not impressed. If I want cheesy metal I'll go listen to Manowar.
I don't really like Trivium because they play practically the same solo for every song, sometimes it fits, sometimes it doesn't, same with other bands like BFMV.
And I'm pretty sure a guitarist of Kirk Hammet's calibre could finger tap if he wanted to and thought it would work, same with Tony Iommi, one of the best guitarists around also, never heard him finger tapping in a song.
If you like that stuff then good for you, you've found what you like but it just isn't my thing, I prefer the simple 'in your face' nature of punk and 'classic metal'.
As for Muse I just feel they have taken too many wrong directions, I used to watch them before they even became famous and they were pretty reasonable back then and didn't try any of this fancy stuff but now it just seems they like to show off for the crowds, maybe to cover their now pretty non-existant stage presence.

kevinLeong November 25 2006 6:15 PM EST

Zoglog...you start off saying that any song other than Time is Running Out (which, by the way, is another great Muse song) sucks, but when Op asks you about another one of their songs you talk about how you just think the way they play their instruments is "amatuerish". Seems like you just don't like Muse...regardless of how their songs really sound.

And come on...just because the "old-school punk" bands never finger tap (though, as it was previously pointed out, Van Halen, KISS, etc did...) suddenly Muse fingertapping is just "showing off?" Sure playing the guitar behind your head is purely entertainment, but then again isn't that what people look and go to concerts for? I really don't get your argument.

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] November 25 2006 10:24 PM EST

There are ways of entertaining a crowd without pulling out the old apparent 'crowd pleasers'.
Good bands don't need that stuff because they have a real stage presence and an energy about them to bypass what I feel are 'amateurish' gimicks, I have put the amateur bit in apostraphes in every post because as difficult as it may be, it is still something which adds no substance to a song and makes it feel like a band need something else to try impress.
I quite like most metal music but if a metal band stood there telling people to start mosh pits then I would be far from impressed, yes it is something that should happen at a metal gig and it's great that they want them to happen, but if they were good enough then people would already be doing it without their question, why should people make a fuss about how great a band is because they finger tap when they should base it off the music and their stage presence?
Slipknot have a great stage presence, I like a reasonable number of their songs and although Joey Jordison plays a 3 minute double bass drum solo upside down, I don't use that as a point as to why their gigs ae good because if that was the only excitement from them being on stage then I would just walk away because I'd have no respect.
I have seen Muse live since becoming big and have been very disappointed with them on stage, even Feeder seem to have a better presence on stage, yes I like Feeder but regardless of that they seem to have a better grip on the crowd without putting a huge amount of effort in technically or verbally, they just command on stage and play, while Muse just play then produce a spectacle like finger tapping to get the crowd really going.
But I don't want to have an argument, as I've already said, if you like Muse and their approach then I'm happy for you, you keep going with it, I'll just keep with the things I prefer.
I mean, at least you aren't a huge fan of Hip Hop, R 'n' B or anything similar to that :)

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 26 2006 11:56 AM EST

I actually am a fan of hip-hop/rap, so what are you going to say about that? And I guess all the Muse fans would disagree that their finger tapping is a gimmick to hide that they have no talent, because, well, they have talent. Most people try to base their opinion of a band being good by their music. But I guess not you, you judge by whether or not they finger tap during their concerts. I mean, honestly, what the hell?

Hyrule Castle [Defy] November 26 2006 12:09 PM EST

"Most people try to base their opinion of a band being good by their music"

That is exactly how you tell if a band is good.... if their music sucks.... the band sucks....

no one cares what they do on stage, they could blow stuff up, and have crappy music and still be a bad band....however they may be cool people....

...but band still sucks

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] November 26 2006 12:19 PM EST

Exactly, I feel the band suck full stop and their stage "performance" doesn't make up for it in the slightest.
There have been other bands I dislike but have been impressed by their presence on stage without the need for these things that make ost people go "wow".
Why do you still feel the need to defend them after I've already said twice before this "If you like them, good for you, I just don't because I don't like their music or the way they try impress".
I don't care that you like them, like who you want but stop calling me an idiot when all I do is say that it doesn't impress me at all whereas well structured songs made up of simple riffs that fit together does.
I'm not attacking you so stop attacking me, if you want an argument go argue with the nearest wall because I'm not interested in your "Your stupid" or "How much of an idiot must you be to say that?" comments.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] November 26 2006 1:59 PM EST

I DARE you to find out where I called you an idiot or said you were dumb. At most I challenged your logic. So aside from being accused of making imagined statements, the reason I keep defending them is because you keep attacking them. It's understandable if you don't like their music, but really, you're going to attack the fact that they can play their instruments and like to show it to the crowd.
