Bid Ordering - Auction Problem? (in General)

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 23 2007 3:23 AM EST

I bid on a MCM minutes after Central Bank did.

I didn't win the auction, and recived no CM telling me I'd been outbid. I didn't remember reading one, so checked my CM log. I had notifications for a MS auction I'd bid on before, but nothing for the more recent MCM one.

Checking when I'd been outbid I saw this;

$402,029 bid by Shelingar (The Long Climb) on February 22 2007 1:06 PM EST
$382,885 (max bid: 382,885) bid by QBGentlemanLoser (Dark Lament) on February 22 2007 2:19 PM EST
$347,288 bid by Central Bank (Mr. Chairman) on February 22 2007 2:18 PM EST

Shelinger outbid me an hour *before* CB and I placed our bids?

TheHatchetman February 23 2007 3:27 AM EST

perhaps he had a bid before CB, that was low enough minimum to cause CB to bid, but the proxy moved him up... then you bid and it did the same... No idea about the lack of CM though...

TheHatchetman February 23 2007 3:27 AM EST

Actually, if they have a proxy it tells you when you place a bid that you were outbid...

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 23 2007 4:06 AM EST

Yup, it was Shelingars first bid in the auction. Whole list;

$315,000 bid by PurpleCobra (CobraFund) on February 22 2007 8:44 AM EST
$300,000 bid by NINAbuser (MothersOfInvention) on February 21 2007 7:32 PM EST
$295,491 bid by PurpleCobra (CobraFund) on February 22 2007 8:44 AM EST
$268,019 bid by PurpleCobra (CobraFund) on February 22 2007 8:43 AM EST
$243,101 bid by Strongbadius (Strongbadius) on February 22 2007 6:59 AM EST
$220,500 bid by mastinox (The Black Knight) on February 22 2007 1:16 AM EST
$200,000 bid by mastinox (The Black Knight) on February 21 2007 11:05 PM EST
$110,250 bid by mastinox (The Black Knight) on February 21 2007 11:05 PM EST
$100,000 bid by PurpleCobra (CobraFund) on February 21 2007 9:43 PM EST

Also check out the bid by NINAbuser. It's a day before Purplecobra's. :/

Nerevas February 23 2007 4:26 AM EST

Basically, he bid here (timewise)

$347,288 bid by Central Bank (Mr. Chairman) on February 22 2007 2:18 PM EST
--->Shelingar's Bid<----- 1:06 PM EST
$315,000 bid by PurpleCobra (CobraFund) on February 22 2007 8:44 AM EST

At the time you bid it would have shown Shelingar as the winning bid, and Central Bank as the bidder before that. You then accidentally failed to notice the message immediately after bidding that someone had a previously higher bid. You didn't get a CM that you'd been outbid because your bid was never "winning".

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 23 2007 5:58 AM EST

I don't think that's the case Nerevas, I'm sure I was the winning bid when I bid and according to the auction screen I bidded on, I out bid CB.

If that was the case, why hasn't Shelingar's original bid and original bid amount been recorded in the Auction list, with the incremantal increases from outbidding people after recorded, like Mastinox and Purplecobras were?

And what's up with NINAbusers bid?

:/

QBJohnnywas February 23 2007 6:02 AM EST

When you make a large bid - Shelingar's was probably about 420k or 450k - the final bid showing for you, whether it's a winning bid or an outbid will be your end total only. The other increments during the bidding don't show at the end.

So that odd bid in the middle - the time was the original bid time, but it was outbid at that point in the rankings.

TheHatchetman February 23 2007 6:03 AM EST

the original amount placed by the proxy goes away, and moves up to the next bid increment after they are outbid... this is assuming their bid was higher...

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 23 2007 6:04 AM EST

For example, take this Auction.

$1,031,410 bid by PurpleCobra (CobraFund) on February 15 2007 4:36 PM EST
$982,295 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 10:43 PM EST
$890,970 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 10:43 PM EST
$808,136 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 10:43 PM EST
$733,003 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 10:43 PM EST
$664,855 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 10:43 PM EST
$603,043 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 10:43 PM EST
$546,978 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 10:42 PM EST
$496,125 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 9:45 PM EST
$450,000 bid by The ANIM4L (Ultimate Wedgie) on February 15 2007 7:42 PM EST
$298,000 bid by Lysander (Ugbutt) on February 15 2007 7:41 PM EST
$200,000 bid by Lysander (Ugbutt) on February 15 2007 7:40 PM EST
$100,000 bid by Deaddrunk (Deaddrunk) on February 15 2007 6:33 PM EST
$25,000 bid by Strongbadius (Strongbadius) on February 15 2007 5:34 PM EST

I'm assuming that Purplecobra was outbidding The ANIM4L, submitting a new bid each time that the proxy outbid him.

This doesn't show his bids that didn't beat The ANIM4L, only The ANIM4L's increasing amount and the winning bid from Purple.

In my case as CB was shown as bidding, doesn't the mean that even if Shelingar had a proxy bid down, CB outbid it, and I in turn outbid CB. Otherwise, our losing bids wouldn't have been mentioned?

muon [The Winds Of Fate] February 23 2007 6:05 AM EST

So, what.. was GL just unlucky enough to bid so soon after the CB bid that the "old" shelingar bid was removed but the "new" shelingar bid hadn't had time to be added? Because otherwise shelingars bid should have appeared _after_ CB bid.

I mean, say somebody bids 200k on item X but it's at 50k right now, and I bid, say 100k... i get my money returned to me, and it updates straight away to say that the original 200k bidder now has the winning bid with(100k + increment)... right?

I agree with GL... something is strange here...

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 23 2007 6:12 AM EST

Another example;

$521,542 bid by forktoad (Tebes) on February 18 2007 12:42 PM EST
$496,707 bid by Central Bank (Mr. Chairman) on February 18 2007 12:40 PM EST
$473,054 bid by forktoad (Tebes) on February 18 2007 12:25 PM EST
$464,002 bid by hzarb (Lega Bank) on February 18 2007 12:08 PM EST
$429,074 bid by forktoad (Tebes) on February 18 2007 12:15 PM EST
$389,183 bid by forktoad (Tebes) on February 18 2007 12:11 PM EST
$353,000 bid by forktoad (Tebes) on February 18 2007 9:23 AM EST
$330,161 (max bid: 330,161) bid by QBGentlemanLoser (Dark Lament) on February 18 2007 6:49 AM EST
$325,001 bid by forktoad (Tebes) on February 17 2007 11:29 PM EST
$299,466 (max bid: 299,466) bid by QBGentlemanLoser (Dark Lament) on February 17 2007 8:26 PM EST
$285,206 bid by hzarb (Lega Bank) on February 17 2007 5:42 PM EST
$275,000 bid by forktoad (Tebes) on February 17 2007 1:20 PM EST
$258,690 bid by hzarb (Lega Bank) on February 17 2007 2:59 PM EST
$171,148 bid by hzarb (Lega Bank) on February 17 2007 2:58 PM EST
$109,885 bid by hzarb (Lega Bank) on February 17 2007 2:58 PM EST

Take hzarb (I assume it's him) outbidding a proxy placed by forktoad. You don't see the losing bids placed, only winning bids.

Therefore my bid on the MCM was a winning bid.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 23 2007 6:16 AM EST

I've just been made aware that no money was transfered from me to the Auctioneer for the bid on the MCM. :/

Now I'm royally confused. If I was automatically outbid by a proxy, why does my bid show in the list? Can anyone else see my bid there, or is it only me?

:/

QBJohnnywas February 23 2007 6:19 AM EST

You're there, but your bid wasn't enough to beat Shelingar's hidden bid total by the looks of things. You can check Shelingar's transfers; he gets the MCM, and there is a (secret) over bid returned.

TheHatchetman February 23 2007 6:20 AM EST

we can see your bid, it was placed there so that others may see why his bid jumped...

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 23 2007 6:36 AM EST

That doesn't happen.

Look at the two other examples I posted. Losing bids *aren't* shown.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 23 2007 6:43 AM EST

If I could figure out what the minimum bid increase was for that auction, I could see if I was bidding the minimum above CB bid, of if there was a 'hidden' bid by Shelingar in there. :/

muon [The Winds Of Fate] February 23 2007 1:17 PM EST

No, losing bids _are_ shown (take a look at the CML auction at the moment; NINAbuser had bid 105k or something, bid the minimum which was 110k, it put Abuser's bid above mine (because he had bid more to begin with). My bid, despite being made _after_ Abuser's, is still shown, but _below_ his because he has made no second bid.

So, in your case, your bid should be shown, but directly above that, the "revised" bid from Shelingar should show.

This did not occur, and so I agree, there must be a bug somewhere...

smallpau1 - Go Blues [Lower My Fees] February 23 2007 2:30 PM EST

GL, in this case:

PurpleCobra probably had an Ebay-Style bid around $1,100,000

So The ANIM4L kept bidding the next "lowest possible bid", but PurpleCobras ebay bid kept animals from going over, not the other way around

Purple Cobra February 23 2007 2:56 PM EST

I was really happy I won that auction too. I <3 ELB.

bartjan February 24 2007 4:08 AM EST

GL, take one of those auctions and re-order the bids by time, most recent one on top.
Now you'll notice that not every bid made was higher than the previous one. Each time that happens, the server made an eBay style bid for someone.

Here I've done that for this auction, and also have included the proxy bids made by the server for the users that have made eBay style bids. You'll see that Shelingar and NINAbuser understand how this works, while mastinox and PurpleCobra don't. Why PurpleCobra did outbid himself, I have no idea.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 24 2007 10:17 AM EST

Bart, my problem is still;

$402,029 proxy bid for Shelingar
$382,885 (max bid: 382,885) bid by QBGentlemanLoser (Dark Lament) on February 22 2007 2:19 PM EST
$364,625 proxy bid for Shelingar
$347,288 bid by Central Bank (Mr. Chairman) on February 22 2007 2:18 PM EST
$402,029 bid by Shelingar (The Long Climb) on February 22 2007 1:06 PM EST

When I came to bid, CB was the top bid. Shouldn't I have seen Shelingar's winning Proxy as the top Bid?

I know I can't prove that CB was the winning Bid when I posted, as showing the finishing auction as CB then Me then Shelingars winning bid makes sense.

But I'm sure that when I placed my bid, CB was shown as the top bidder. :(

bartjan February 24 2007 10:22 AM EST

I think you must have misread it when you made the bid. Shelingar should have been listed as the top bidder.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 24 2007 1:38 PM EST

All I can attribute it to is the time between CB and mines bid. there was only a minute between the too, maybe (as suggested above) the proxy from Shelingar wasn't shown as I bid too close to CB.

:/
