Another developer of greasemonkey extensions decided he was tired of always losing his work when typing stuff into a textarea thing, so he wrote this little extension:
TextArea Backup
I think it's pretty cool, I'm using it right now even!

Jonathan inquired about wysiwyg html editors a (long) while ago. I guess the perfect one hasn't been found so far.
As an alternative, isn't it possible to cause GreaseMonkey to change this textarea into a wysiwyg widget?
I know, probably a lot of work; but perhaps someone else already has made something like this for another site?

WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get?

Is that using HTML but seeing the preview as you're typing?

It's like typing a text, highlighting it and then selecting B in the menu bar to make it bold.
