Referral Link Clarification (in Public Record)

Relic April 7 2007 10:56 AM EDT

Ok, bartjan just changed my referral link to google.com and told me that I cannot pay for referrals. I would like some clarification on this because:
1) Another player posted the same kind of thread and his link still works
2) I posted a thread like this a month or so ago and there were no issues.
3) I am not asking for charity referrals, I am _paying_ for each of them.

If this isn't allowed period then so be it, but it would be nice to get some consistency and maybe something about it in the wiki, because I looked and couldn't find anything.

QBRanger April 7 2007 10:57 AM EDT

A very long time ago, after cb2 has been out for just a couple months, Jon put the edict that no referrals in forums is allowed.

This was to stop the spamming of forums by people paying for referrals.

I will see if I can find the exact post.

Relic April 7 2007 11:00 AM EDT

I see people selling money from CB2 to another game, or vice versa, imo this is no different than paying for a referral on another game.

Bast,

Thanks for finding that link.

I found it 30 sec after you posted :)

Relic April 7 2007 11:05 AM EDT

I think those posts for Dark Throne were excessive and also the user was not paying for referrals just asking/spamming for them.

My thread is not even in the same ballpark. I am paying 50k for each referral. Just like if I was paying CB2 for money/items on another game.

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] April 7 2007 11:08 AM EDT

I just read the "and other" with the "or any other CB forum" to be pretty clear.

Also, I've already mentioned the problem to Hatch. re: his post.

QBRanger April 7 2007 11:10 AM EDT

As of now, Dark Throne and other "click to give me referral points" crap is not welcome in OT or any other CB forum.

Glory, what your doing is the exact thing Jon wants to avoid.

Having people click a link to give you a bonus is exactly what you are doing.

Relic April 7 2007 11:15 AM EDT

Let's hold a vote. I see no difference now that FS/WTB threads go to CM and do not spam the boards. Selling referrals or money on another game is the same thing.

Xenko April 7 2007 11:17 AM EDT

I agree that some standard rule needs to be set up, since I see these pay for referral posts in FS/WTB occaisionally, and sometimes they are changed, and other times they continue without any issue. This haphazard enforcement of what may or may not be a rule is annoying to say the least.

I was under the impression that if you made the post in FS/WTB, and were offering compensation, then it is no different than selling CBD for USD, NP, or even an Xbox 360. As long as the proper etiquette was followed (e.g. don't constantly bump the thread, don't constantly recreate the thread) then this was type of post was allowed.

Maybe Jon could chime in and clarify what he wants :D

bartjan April 7 2007 11:19 AM EDT

I enforce whatever gets reported to me...

Relic April 7 2007 11:46 AM EDT

Let me clarify, I am not upset or dissatisfied with how bartjan handled my post. I am only asking for either better consistency across the board, and/or a re-evaluation of the current rule due to changes in the forum FS/WTB thread system.

If paying for a referral is not the same as selling CB2 for some other game currency, then confused as I may be over that, I will accept it.

Like I said, let's put it to a vote. With Jonathan obviously being the swing vote. =)

Wasp April 7 2007 11:46 AM EDT

Seems that Glory is purchasing a service for 50k. Same if I asked someone to do my homework for 50k. Lets be reasonable now, it's not like he is spamming in the forums.

Saying that, those constant Dark Throne referall posts were getting slightly annoying :P

QBRanger April 7 2007 12:10 PM EDT

"As of now, Dark Throne and other "click to give me referral points" crap is not welcome in OT or any other CB forum."

I am no ambiguity in Jon's post about referrals.

What is the problem? The statement he made was very cut and dry.

If someone wants it changed, then ask Jon to change things.

Otherwise, there is no questioning his statement.

Glory, what you did was a "click to give me referral points", which is banned as per Jon himself.

Relic April 7 2007 12:17 PM EDT

Hence the requested call for the community (jon included) to re-evaluate this rule.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] April 7 2007 12:19 PM EDT

Maybe there should be a Referrals section of the board? So people could pay other people who want to make some easy CB$?

DrAcO5676 [The Knighthood III] April 7 2007 10:30 PM EDT

How about instead of a link to click on you just say "Message me for a link to an awesome game I would like you to try. I will give you X amount of CB cash for the privelage of you useing my referral link."

[RX3]Cotillion April 8 2007 1:40 AM EDT

People would still complain because it's still a post... My opinion on the matter ( not that anyone cares or that it'll change anything ) if you don't want to read referrals then don't click the thread... I don't see what the negative impact is on CB.

The day that the administration tells you what their rules actually are, and they enforce them consistently, is the day the sun comes up in the west... Unfortunately, pointing out the falaciousness of ad-hoc unwritten rule enforcement leads to ridicule and censorship of the person pointing it out.

AdminNightStrike April 8 2007 12:38 PM EDT

Correction:

"what their rules actually are, and they enforce them consistently, is "

"what their rules actually are and enforces them consistently is"

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 8 2007 2:35 PM EDT

Yeah because the admins here owe you...and you deserve "justice"

Relic April 8 2007 2:45 PM EDT

Let's not turn this into an admin bash, I simply wanted clarification, that was given via a _very_ old post about a not so relevant problem today. I believe we should evaluate a potential change that's all.

bartjan April 8 2007 3:15 PM EDT

As I said before, I only enforce what I am (made) aware of.
So when someone informed me of Glory's post, I acted. Because Glory pointed me to another post, I also acted on that post.
Perhaps there are also other posts that should not be allowed. I do pretend that I have a life, so I myself do not always have the time to go through each and every thread in detail; if you feel that something is said in Forum that (perhaps) should not be allowed, please inform an admin about it, but do not complain about inconsistent enforcement: admins are human.
