Mem has a Photography website... finally! (in Off-topic)

Mem May 27 2007 5:44 AM EDT

No, I'm not trying to sell anything! I just want your opinions on the website I created for my photography business.

With that said, it's pretty crazy to come back here after all this time and see all the same old cats still around. How the heck are you guys?

Unfortunately I'm far too busy to be able to come back and hang around here (if you'd even want me back), but I trust most of you, so I wanted your honest opinions and criticisms on my site. (Ask Verifex what 'honest opinions and criticisms' are. He's the only one that's given me that so far.)

So go here and let me know what you think! Thanks, and take care of yourselves!

I already spoke with him in chat, but the link was off.

Link.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] May 27 2007 7:43 AM EDT

that is a pretty big pre loader you got there.
And only 3 dots? I had a hard time finding them where to click.

Mrs Beee May 27 2007 8:32 AM EDT

Just checked out your site. Did you take the pics? They are amazing! Being blonde caused me to have some difficulty getting into the site. It wasn't till I started moving the mouse and it went over the dots that I knew what to do. Same problem looking at pics in others. Feel some people may miss seeing all the pics as it is not clear what to do. Hope that helps and good luck with your endeavours.

AdminNightStrike May 27 2007 8:42 AM EDT

Using a case sensitive server with capital letters in your index page is a generally bad idea.

Mem May 27 2007 8:49 AM EDT

Thanks for all your input.

I've definitely considered labeling the dots, but I didn't really want any text to be permanently displayed. We'll see.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by that, NightStrike. If you could please elaborate I'd appreciate it. (I'm also very new to this whole thing, so laymen terms would help me out.)

1. http://www.isoscelesphotography.com/ doesn't work, you need to set a default document
2. http://www.isoscelesphotography.com/index.html doesn't work, you need to make urls non-case sensitive.
3. I like the general clean feel of the site, but the little wheel of numbers to the left of the picture display doesn't scale well for a lot of photos.
4. I would suggest making it so you can open the images in a larger view when clicked on.
5. Nice site and nice pics =)

Slashundhack [We Forge Our Own Stuff] May 27 2007 2:53 PM EDT

I couldn't even view it some how my viewers aren't working today. All I got was a big Q with a question mark . I think something is corrupted or not using the right viewer.

Mem May 27 2007 10:28 PM EDT

Glory, I'm not really sure how you go about doing those first two things, but they definitely are at the top of my agenda-- I've got 1000 business cards that are, for the time being, useless because of that whole 'Index.html' thing. I like the idea of being able to open the pictures in a larger view, but the whole idea of keeping it in Flash was so that people don't go stealing my stuff. I'm not sure how to disallow saving of the pictures, and I don't want to have to go and put my logo on all of the pictures.

If anyone has any tips, or knows where to get some help please let me know.

And for now I'll leave you with a few of the pictures I took today:

I know nothing about the workings of web sites, but yours certainly does not suck.

And as always, your pictures are beautiful. Glad you came back to show some of your work :)

QBOddBird May 27 2007 10:45 PM EDT

Yep, they are very good! =)

[MG]Mecca-Devilbot [Clan of One] May 28 2007 12:51 AM EDT

Ooo... Purdy...

I liked it. I agree though, it does have long load times.

In regards to the whole 'You a stealinga mya picktures!" have you considered watermarking them? A faint, yet oh so legible "MeM was here!" would keep those deviants away!

And if you did go the watermark way, you could also (and i highly recommend this) have the option of a HTML page, rather then flash. You can incorporate most of the same fuctionality, without the excessive bytes.

[What? The spellchecker doesn't have a 'Mario-speak Option?]

Ok, this is the new link. Still haven't heard from a lot of you. Hope you haven't all forgotten me...

AdminG Beee May 28 2007 2:42 PM EDT

Very good Mem.

I think the web-site is really good although it did take a few seconds to realise I had to hold the mouse over the moving grass/wheat to see the images in the others section. Perhaps some folks may not be as patient and just assume it's broken..? I do like it though and it would be a pity to have to put instructions on the site explaining how to navigate it.

The content is great too. You have a talent.

I think this is a great website (http://www.billyconnolly.com/)from a presentation as well as content point of view. Perhaps you can get some ideas from it as yours is maybe going in the same kind of direction.

QBsutekh137 May 28 2007 4:02 PM EDT

I think it's wonderful. I love a website I have to "explore", and yet it doesn't take long to find things (the site is easy to learn because of all the perfectly executes mouse-over feedback, IMO).

I agree a small bit with G_Beee about the whole "is it broken?" fine line of execution... Is the "Other" page showing that you can also do web design and presentation? (because it is pretty clear to me you can do that too!) If so, maybe just a _smidge_ more direction letting folks know that you can present their content (and your own) in stellar ways -- could be that "thing" that sets you apart, at least compared to other photographers?

Fifty bucks for a headshot?! o.O Sounds too cheap! :P

Great work!

Mem May 28 2007 4:52 PM EDT

I wish I could, Sut! It's just 'Other' because 'Landscape, Nature, & Architecture' is too long. I do have plans of possibly expanding to have separate pages for each of those, however I don't want too many photos up there-- just my best ones. I think too many photography sites suffer from the photographer just putting everything they've ever shot up on their site, leaving the viewer to sift through thousands of pictures to find the good ones. I wanted something simple, yet something that would make you think and it seems to me that I've gotten that.

I really appreciate all the feedback I've gotten, but I need more!

th00p May 28 2007 5:42 PM EDT

Um. Make it sexier. By putting that picture of you up there with that sexy reverse goatee!

Xenko May 28 2007 7:05 PM EDT

I'm using Firefox and the content is low on my screen. I have to scroll down a bit to center it, which I find annoying.

Other than that the site looks good. Maybe make the logo and the three dots bigger on the first page. They look small on my screen.

QBsutekh137 May 28 2007 10:58 PM EDT

I see where you are coming from Mem, and better that the "right" people get it than for you to dumb it down so everyone (even me and that thick G_Beee :P) gets it too easily... *smile*

Love the site, love the pics...

Slashundhack [We Forge Our Own Stuff] May 29 2007 12:45 AM EDT

Ah if you made those gray dots morph into different colored gems or children's rubber balls it would be nicer to me . Though it would lose the monochrome structure, art um fire ,bling, flash? dynamic you were going for.Hum maybe just shade the dots differently so its obvious they lead to different sections? Hated the still picture octagonal controller. I guess I liked the site over all though. Really looking forward to seeing it when it's fully fleshed out ! Good Luck !

Slashundhack [We Forge Our Own Stuff] May 29 2007 4:30 PM EDT

I was out for a stumble and I found this site .It would really spiff up your stuff. Click ME Well its new to me anyway .

Mem May 30 2007 9:05 PM EDT

Slash, that's a neat little function, but it would slow down my already slow site even more because I'd have to keep the pictures at a higher resolution. Just to get to the slow load times I'm already getting (particularly for you poor dial-up users) I've had to take my 5MB photo files down to about 50KB, some even lower. I wouldn't want to put up a magnifier that shows a bunch of pixelated blobs, so my pictures would have to be that much larger.

That said, if anyone knows a decent amount about Flash please let me know, particularly if you're willing to help me out with a few issues I'm having.

There's still several of you whom I haven't heard from yet!
