News story of a man beaten to death in Texas

I feel sick to my stomach. I mean, my God, what is going here? I try to have faith in people, I really do, but we're still animals. :\

SaintMichael June 20 2007 5:55 PM EDT

That is sick.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] June 20 2007 6:52 PM EDT

Don't go there. This is just sick.

QBsutekh137 June 20 2007 6:55 PM EDT

Don't go where? That's the problem, something like this could happen anywhere...

Brakke Bres [Ow man] June 20 2007 6:56 PM EDT

i mean the topic. It sickens me how over the top the reactions are.

QBsutekh137 June 20 2007 6:58 PM EDT

Indeed -- and "mob mentality" gives me the shivers. I don't understand it, and don't know how it can be remedied. That makes me very, very depressed.

QBJohnnywas June 20 2007 7:11 PM EDT

Unfortunately this is something people are capable of; I'm not sure there is a remedy. But we're also capable of reactions like yours Sut, the opposite end of the spectrum. Take some faith from your own reaction. Not everyone is an animal, some people are just like you.

Amazing how quick that went from celebration to tragedy

QBsutekh137 June 20 2007 7:17 PM EDT

Well, that's a very nice thing to say, JW, and I appreciate it. I just wish my sick feeling could translate better into education, joy, redemption, or all of the above in scenarios like this.

But sadly, it just is what it is -- me feeling sick. :\

Not to mention we will probably have to endure this being "ripped from the headlines" on future episodes of various and sundry Law & Order episodes... ACK!

QBsutekh137 June 20 2007 7:22 PM EDT

And OB, I fear that for some folks, tragedy IS celebration. There are those who get a kick out of violence -- mentally, physically, and spiritually. I wish I could find the link, but I read an article recently that talked about the fact that for some, violence and violent reactions were found to be more natural and calming than for others... Can't find the link now...

I'd like to think that anyone who was part of the incident feels tremendous, horrible guilt, but my guess is that they are not. People can convince themselves of all sorts of actions and righteousness, especially when a mob is involved.

I used to live a few blocks from where this happened. I taught at a school where some of those families sent their kids.

Where are Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson now? I'd like to see a response from them on this.

Apparently this was very common in Indonesia. When you struck someone while driving, it's advised that you don't stop to help but drive straight to a police station and report the accident. On many occasions when the driver tried to help, he will be beaten to death or near death and his vehicle will be smashed to pieces.
