Sir Leon [Soup Ream] September 3 2007 12:10 PM EDT

A friend and I just got into a conversation about this earlier and i was just curious about others views. If you could_please_answer the following questions that would be great.

1. What do you think are the pros and cons of imageshack, flickr and/or photobucket compared to other free hosting sites?

2. What are you most interested in when you go to these sites?

3. What features would you like to see added to these sites and why?

4. In regards to advertising, How often do you click on ads? Which ads do you prefer, text based or image-based?

5. Do you prefer a flashy or a plain layout for the navigation of the website?

6. Anything you would like to say about imaging hosting sites feel free to.

Also, A couple small rewards will be given with the use of a random number generatator when this post is inactive for 3 days.

1.

Pros: I can stick an image up there to use when posting elsewhere, or when making a website. These are better for more permanent image hosting, but I personally have no use for that...

Cons: I have to log in, remember yet another username and password, and wait on all these little icons and thumbnails to load. As a dialup user, that's slow and boring.

2. Just sticking an image up and getting a URL for it.

3. Perhaps a temporary quick hosting feature?

4. I never click ads, and I hate image-based ones due to my slow connection.

5. Plain, so it'll load faster.

6. I prefer pixilive right now (thanks, SNK4R!) just 'cuz it meets my needs: a site where I can quickly upload an image to use when I'm posting on a forum board like this one.

1. I think the pros of those "big 3" include a good reputation to being virus and spyware free, whereas if you go to another site, you may mess up your computer.

2. Other than pictures (duh), it's mostly my friends' albums

3. The ability to edit and crop the pictures.

4. I rarely click on ads, but I prefer text-based ones, as images just .. don't work for me.

5. Plain. Make it nice and easy.

6. Other than imageshack and photobucket being blocked from my computer, nothing :)

SNK3R September 3 2007 1:50 PM EDT

  1. Pros: Permanent image hosting.
Cons: Having to make an account. Images are censored. Tons of ads. Not a very user-friendly interface.
  2. I want free image hosting, easy uploading, no cap/restraints on images (like sizes), no bandwidth limit, preferably having to make no account.
  3. I'd like to see a more friendly user-interface for uploading multiple files -- perhaps using Java, maybe?
  4. I never click on ads. I hate them with a passion. I prefer image-based ads so I can tell where there are ads so I can avoid them. :)
  5. I prefer a plain layout. I don't like to be confused on what their interface is trying to do to me, other than let me upload my image.
  6. Other than suggesting Pixilive to OB (see his post), I have also found another that I really like that's simple, ad-free, un-censored image-hosting. It's called BAYIMG. Forget all of those big-named image-hosting sites that have ads and horrible interfaces, and use something that's much better! (The only con I can see about this size is its inability to upload multiple images, but seeing as how I rarely do that, it fits me very well.)

SNK3R September 3 2007 1:56 PM EDT

^ I just read that you can .ZIP or .RAR all your files and upload the RAR or ZIP file to upload all of your images. That's more than decent for uploading multiple files at once. :)

Oh C'mon 3 replies?

Maybe this will generate some interest.

500k will be the grand prize when it remains inactive for 3 days. There will still be 3 small prizes. All you have to do is answer 6 simple questions!

1. What do you think are the pros and cons of imageshack, flickr and/or photobucket compared to other free hosting sites?
Free is always a plus. I use Imageshack when I just want to quickly upload a picture and show to someone. Photobucket if I'm going to be using the picture often/for long periods of time. Never used Flickr

2. What are you most interested in when you go to these sites?
Oops.. I think I answered that above. Its always nice if the site is easy to use, I don't want to spend too much time trying to figure out how to upload/organize my files.

3. What features would you like to see added to these sites and why?
Hmm... as long as I get a link to the picture, I'm cool ;-)

4. In regards to advertising, How often do you click on ads? Which ads do you prefer, text based or image-based?
I never click on ads... but I prefer to see text-based since they are less flashy, but just as annoying.

5. Do you prefer a flashy or a plain layout for the navigation of the website?
Plain.. like I said above, I don't like flashy :-P

6. Anything you would like to say about imaging hosting sites feel free to.

1. What do you think are the pros and cons of imageshack, flickr and/or photobucket compared to other free hosting sites?

I haven't really used any other image hosting sites besides for imageshack and photobucket.

2. What are you most interested in when you go to these sites?

If I go to the sites, I like to upload a picture, get the url, and be done with it.

3. What features would you like to see added to these sites and why?

I think an image hosting site is an image hosting site. There doesn't really need to be anything else added imo, but then again, I don't upload 5 pictures every day, so I can't tell you how well the sites fair with organization.

4. In regards to advertising, How often do you click on ads? Which ads do you prefer, text based or image-based?

I never click ads. I prefer no ads, but if I had to pick one or the other, I'd have to pick text based due to the annoyance of the ads with flashing lights and stupid sounds that you can't make shut up.

5. Do you prefer a flashy or a plain layout for the navigation of the website?

I prefer a layout that is simple and easy to use. I can care less if it's flashy, or just plain bland sand color.

6. Anything you would like to say about imaging hosting sites feel free to.

Not much, besides for the fact that I like the ability to copy and paste the url that allows you to post your image without having the annoying ad's. I think imageshack allows you to do that. It speeds up loading times quite a bit.

1. What do you think are the pros and cons of imageshack, flickr and/or photobucket compared to other free hosting sites?

The problem with most of the popular imagehosts is that they have limited support for multiple file uploads. I would like to be able to select a folder and have every image automatically upload without any other input. Also, I hate file type restrictions. I would prefer to be able to upload any type of image without having to convert first before I upload. Finally, I hate it when those sites prevent images from being hotlinked.
On the plus side, free sites are always nice, and I like that they give you a gallery where you can view all your uploads.

2. What are you most interested in when you go to these sites?

Free uploading

3. What features would you like to see added to these sites and why?

Batch file uploads, no file type restrictions, no ads, image hotlinking

4. In regards to advertising, How often do you click on ads? Which ads do you prefer, text based or image-based?

Never, I use Ad Block Plus with Filterset.g so I rarely ever see an ad. I hate flash and java ads with a vengeance and any site that has those will usually end up in my do not go to list. Text ads are okay, as long as they aren't dominating the screen.

5. Do you prefer a flashy or a plain layout for the navigation of the website?

Plain, but one that looks nice. If it contains flash or java for major elements, I dislike that greatly, but a simple layout which has all the functionality that I need is perfect.

6. Anything you would like to say about imaging hosting sites feel free to.

It seems to me that you are thinking about starting an image hosting site, or are working on a school project or something. If so, be aware that the market is already really crowded so you will need some really spiffy features to attract new users. An online image editor for basic editing (image size, orientation, color, hue, saturation, file type, etc.) might be interesting.

Slashundhack [We Forge Our Own Stuff] September 3 2007 10:58 PM EDT

1)I like Imageshack more than Photobucket though I like the lasts simplicity more . Only two I've used so It's all I can comment on.
2)Sticking picks in CB
3)Unlimited content but still free !
4)1 in 10 ? Can't say I've ever bought what they are selling so it's moot though.
5)Neat but plainish .
6)If they weren't free I'd never use them .
