Revenge of the Wolverines? (in Off-topic)

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] September 6 2007 3:22 AM EDT

Is it common for all automobiles with Michigan plates to camp the left lane of The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways as if the drivers are afraid of kudzu? Or is this clogging of Southern arteries I-81 & I-26 some sort of traffic revenge against the hillbillies?

(Note to touring Canadians: In the 'States the left lane of a 4-lane divided highway is for passing slower vehicles that, in turn, should be keeping to the right. It is not for getting 3 meters closer to whatever might be of visual interest out the left side of your vehicle. Nor for practicing the Queen's method of vehicular transport. There are enormous white signs, reading KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS, indicating as much. )

Go Mountaineers!

the pendulum swings...after allowing conservatism to run rampant in the good ole u.s. of a., we are now seeing a shift to the left. these trends are usually noticed first on our highways and interstate system.

Perhaps I've been influenced by drivers from New York and New Jersey, but I'd have to say the solution is to simply pass on the right, and maybe throw some sort of obscene gesture to register your displeasure with the idiot slowing down traffic.

I think you need to be more aggressive, Bast.

She needs to be more aggressive !?

Remember, you're talking to the lady who killed Bambi's mother!

InebriatedArsonist September 6 2007 7:56 AM EDT

Well, if she was a natural redhead I wouldn't have had to say that.

Besides, the deer have it coming.

AdminG Beee September 6 2007 8:11 AM EDT

Oh they had it coming alright. At about 60mph if I'm not wrong... ;)

Not to be pedantic, okay, okay, specifically to be pedantic, but last time I checked Michigan plates were issued only to residents of Michigan which as of the last census was part of the U.S. :)
A couple of weeks back, driving from Toronto to Montreal and back, I didn't see too much left lane camping, so maybe you were running into snowbirds getting an early migratory start. Back when these folks were born, horses could go in any lane they wanted.

AdminG Beee September 6 2007 10:21 AM EDT

You all drive on the wrong side of the road over there anyway. Weirdos !

Yukk September 6 2007 10:25 AM EDT

Yeah, as an Aussie, I agree. It's confusing to switch back and forth.

AdminG Beee September 6 2007 10:47 AM EDT

Yukk, think how most of the Americans feel. Bast switches back and forth when driving from one state to the next. Just ask the deer !

As a 20-year veteran of driving the Queen Elizabeth's Way (QEW) in Ontario, as well as the "400" system of highways in the Toronto area, I can safely say that asking Canadian drivers not to "rubberneck" is tantamount to asking them to boycott hockey and beer.

;)

In the birthplace of the paved road-- Detroit-- things are done quite differently than in the other areas of the United States. It is quite commonplace to drive in the left lane for no other reason than just to drive in a lane. There is no regard for a passing vehicle. Naturally, those of us more logically inclined people refuse to be a part of the norm, and do shake our fists at the Philistines we are forced to pass on the right.
