Possible Strat Change (in General)

theskier [Star Trek] October 12 2007 10:23 PM EDT

I am looking for some advise for my character munk... currently running as a single UC... I am having problems with mage teams eating me alive with the fireballs...

UC is currently: 394,307/126,878 (37)
my bow is x27 +31

I plan on increasing my armor very shortly by forging it up...

I have thought about training either guardening angel, dispell magic, or antimagic field... I tried antimagic field earlier, but didn't see much of a difference...

I would like to stay as a single minion character if at all possible.

any suggestions would be helpfull..

Thanks

Mage Shield + AMF

Changing from a bow to an axbow or exbow will definitely help you in the long run, not necessarily vs the mage part but with other teams.

Champ.... the mage shield would take away from my UC... but the amf would problably help...

The non mage teams I dont have that much problem with... I can check out using one of the cross bows... I would like to get my hands on an ELB though..

Don't use bows if you are not training archery. That's my only advise :P

Single monks are FB and FF fodder. Unless you get another minion, there is nothing you can do to defend yourself against FB mages.

Your best chance is to try to get a draw by buying a huge SoD with explosive shots.

The Mage Shield would only help if you can upgrade it to over +40. Else a normal fireball will kill you in the first or second round.

If you are going to invest in an enchantment, go for DM, because it will help against GA, Protection, and AS, which are also single monk killers.

Keep in mind I've never run a UC team, but I have read a lot of talk about them from people who have. ;)

As a single UC tank, you are always going to have trouble against mage teams. Period. Even with a MgS (which would make all spells except Protection useless for you), you'd only be reducing the damage by half, probably less. In general, I'd say most mage teams you find will either have kill slots or Evasion, possibly both. Unless you have a GIGANTIC ELB, you're not beating Evasion. Kill slots take time (that you don't have) to kill. Since you can't attack more than 1 minion per round without a SoD + Explosive Shots, you're going to be taking lots of damage before you can even begin to attack the mage.

Specialization > Generalization, unless you're in a fighting clan. Pick a type of team that's in abundance, and focus all your efforts on beating on them. You'll find that focusing on a single demographic will probably improve your challenge bonus and make it easier on you to find targets. I speak from experience here. Having ~85% of my XP in EC makes it ridiculously easy to find targets, and I can fight way higher than a strat that tries to beat everybody.

Forgot to write this other bit of advice: Don't waste your time training AMF. You need to invest too much XP into HP/DX/ST/UC to have an AMF with a decent size.

You AMF would never be significantly big enough to make a difference in any fight except maybe against characters that use base Decay. However, I think that DM combined with a SoD is a better way to deal with that problem.

In most cases, a base protection trained to about level 1100 will give you a 5% damage decrease if not dispelled, which is more than AMF will give a single monk in most cases.

Your best bet is to endure for now and then hire another minion and train just HP and PL on that new minion. Put all the wall armor and mage shield on it and you should survive better against mage teams.

MgS. Its worth the -5 UC.
