no idea, bluesy styles/influences? the who and booker t and the mgs are about all i know from that list....and prince. i've heard of chic but only a few songs so not enough to figure this out.

are they all British?

I didn't know you played guitar JW! So do I, but only about 10 years on the instrument for myself.

What do they all have in common? They are some of the most underrated guitar players in music for one. Prince can lay it down with more feeling and power then the likes of Malmsteen any day. Townshend has some amazing riffs that rival that of Jimmy Page (he is too sloppy for me) and yet receives little spotlight in comparison. That would be my guess, they are all underrated or not as well known as some less talented people.

On a side note it's too bad David Gilmour didn't make your list. He is the reason I picked up an electric guitar, he has got some mad feeling in his music, even if it isn't the most technically proficient.

Nobody's got it yet. It's actually very simple. Lets see, another clue.......hmmm...ok: as a guitarist each and everyone of them works really well with a drummer. Really obvious clue: it's not about their lead playing....somebody should get that one now!

They are also lead singers?

It really was as simple as that. All my favourite guitarists are excellent all round guitar players, but all of them excel in rhythm guitar, that most underrated of all parts in a band. When a rhythm player is great it catches my ears like no other instrument. Now, where's my wah wah pedal gone?
