Thanksgiving, the holiday, was created when we settled. The sole purpose of Thanksgiving? - celebrating and being thankful for what we have after harvest each year.
Basically all the pilgrims in some place in Virginia got together with some nice ole' Indians and celebrated all the food they had.. by eating it. Then during the next few years we killed all those Indians, grew food on their land, and continued to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Wikipedia might tell you it's "Thank God the Natives Didn't Have Guns" Day. We have long celebrated this day, as it didn't take us over 100 years to admit that the land wasn't actually uninhabited when we got here. ;)
