Yes, so officially my maths teacher is retarded. Apparently it means "Approximately equal to" :/ Even though that's the hyphen with a squiggly line above it.

I think she might have forgot to put another hyphen below the original hyphen. Squiggly line over equal sign is "approximately equal to....

the actual sign was a division sign with an extra hypen, for anyone else interested :/

Squiggly line (tilde) over equals sign actually means "is isomorphic to", which is way over and above approximately equal to.
