Disappointment!! (in Off-topic)

..my old Command and Conquer: Red Alert game only works with Windows 95. =(

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] February 21 2008 2:55 AM EST

compatibility mode...
right click on the exe file itself and click on the compatibility mode...

If that doesn't work I might have another solution for you, but since you're on dialup I'd have to send you a CD...

QBOddBird February 21 2008 2:56 AM EST

Nah, novice, it's the install file, not the program itself

QBOddBird February 21 2008 2:57 AM EST

installer* not necessarily any particular file

ActionAction February 21 2008 3:03 AM EST

If only you didn't have dial-up! Life would be so much sweeter for you, dear.

that's why they made C&C3 =]

Daz February 21 2008 3:14 AM EST

I borrowed The first decade from my friend, only to find that CnC 1 and RA1 run perfectly... except at half speed. I've been playing pretty much everything else on the disk, though. Finished RA2 yesterday and am a bit through Tiberian Sun today. I have had (most of) these games forever, yet didn't play the story mode of any.

Command & Conquer Red Alert on Windows XP

QBOddBird February 21 2008 5:44 PM EST

Forsaken - I know it! If only it was available...

Khardin - You are a god amongst men. Thank you.

QBOddBird February 21 2008 7:18 PM EST

Harrumph. I finally got RA1 to work, thanks to Khardin!

...so I play it for a little while, fun nostalgic gameplay, and I decide to play Red Alert 2. Installs just fine, being a newer game, yay! I go to play it...get to the first mission, the Fort Braxton mission, and it freezes -every- time a small movie opens up.

So I go to Google. A number of other people apparently have this problem, but NOBODY offers an actual solution. Boooooooo.

Now I'm mad at my computer and I'm just going to go watch TV. I hate you, Microsoft.

Click

j'bob February 21 2008 7:23 PM EST

ooty, Microsoft is punishing you for making the moon go away, which they own.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] February 21 2008 7:27 PM EST

or create a virtual pc that runs win98SE and play the game.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] February 21 2008 7:27 PM EST

too bad you cant play online, you and GW versus me would be funny to watch ;)

QBOddBird February 21 2008 7:31 PM EST

Pfft, I would own you.

And yes, I'm 100% confident in my boast because I'm on a dialup connection and can't prove it. Nonetheless, I would own you. ;'D

QBOddBird February 21 2008 7:43 PM EST

Henk - tried that link, followed the instructions, did nothing for my movie freeze-up problem. =(

I also tried online advice to add a new line to the ini file - did nothing.

Anyone else? =(

QBOddBird February 21 2008 9:06 PM EST

patched to version 1.006, the latest version...didn't fix it.

QBOddBird February 22 2008 12:21 PM EST

Let's stop talking about NUB forgers and focus on the real issues at hand here people!!!

I still can't play RA:2!!

ActionAction February 22 2008 12:32 PM EST

I've got a better idea..

OB you should play SC with me :3.

It's too bad I don't actually know anything about computers, or else I would try to help you. (>'.')>
