The name for Oz in the "Wizard of Oz" was thought up when the creator, Frank Baum, looked at his filing cabinet and saw A-N, and O-Z, hence "Oz."
Yeah, because the Wonderful Wizard of An would have been terribly confusing.
"We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizzard of An!" "An what?" "Just An" "Huh" "His name is An" "Yeah..... An what!?"

and on a related note, the Name of the Witch of the West (elphaba) from the book Wicked was derived when the author took the sounds of L Frank Baum's initials and blended them together. :)

The Ruby Slippers were silver in the book. they were made red for the movie to show off the fact that it was in color.
