LG Phone Question (in Off-topic)

Desperado [Chaotic Serenity] April 28 2008 8:51 PM EDT

I want to get a LG Viewty : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Viewty
The thing is that its not sold in the US. However they are sold in the UK. I was planning on buying one off ebay.
I currently have a Nokia 5300 with Tmobile.
My question: Can i just switch SIM cards from my old phone to the LG Viewty?

You may be able to. Not all phones are supported by all service providers, & even if its a supported phone it may not work w/ your provider (the software is different). Make sure the phone you're buying will work with your service provider; generally the listing will say "Alltell/Sprint/AT&t/whatever."

Well, according to the T-Mobile Wiki Page, their network is a 1900 MHz network using GPRS or EDGE for data, all of which the phone you showed supports, so assuming they haven't locked down the network to disallow phones they haven't sold, you should be fine.

I know that with Rogers, here in Canada, as soon as I put my SIM into a phone, their network knows what model phone I'm using, but they haven't locked me out even when I was using an unlocked UK phone.

I'd find out directly from the provider or the manufacturer. I upgraded from a SLVR to the ATT Tilt, same provider but the new phone uses a different technology / sim card.

Ok so if i do get one i should look for one that says "Unlocked" or Tmobile?

Pretty much, but it'd be a good idea to talk to a techie dude too. Make sure its not like you have a 32k sim and a 64k is required or some crap

Last I checked, LG only worked on the 3 network, not sure if this is still the case.

Well I called Tmobile and they told me that any phone would work as long as it was unlocked and i switched sim cards. Thanks for the help.
