New Player Goals (in General)

Two of them are stupid.
Forging and rentals.
Forging? Give me a break. Take that garbage out. Jon hasn't done anything for forging in months or years, and then ENCOURAGING new players into believing it's a decent alternative to other means of playing is silly and counter productive. Teach them how to use Help! (Like, make them find a link that requires searching through Help!)
Secondly, rentals. Are you -trying- to lower their rewards? With encumbrance out, not only are their PRs going too dang high, but then you wipe out the dang minion equipping it!
They can't win battles with rented weapons, and if they can, they get no rewards.
You're really hurting new players with these two things, especially the ones who aren't spotted by vets and spend weeks with bad weapons, or a month or two forging -_-
Take them out of the goals, or explain the system to them sooner.
If you want new, productive players in game that is.

I'll say what, here's an idea, why not provide a forging tutorial to new players when they FINISH their NUB. That way, there's still something new left for them when that NUB crashlanding takes place after 4 months of high flying.
As for rentals, i don't know, this'll take some more discussion....

Oh, and you shouldn't need evidence of this. Every mentor in the game can tell you new players are doing this. And even if they're doing it for ONE SINGLE DAY it's too long. The NUB puts them on a timer, one that doesn't hold up much room for error.
This is past annoying. This isn't even a stupid tax. This is you telling someone to do something then kicking them in the teeth for reward.
I'd like to see a group effort to create rental packs for new players.
UC build with near base HG and Gi
Single mage with low NW db or ag
Named MsK and HoC for archers
and a "good luck sucker" button for Melee tanks
This goes along with a long time suggestion of mine concerning adding a user supplied store... but I'll keep harrassing fexy about that.
user created packs? why not store spawned newbie pack for rent?

There already is a very good video tutorial on forging in Community.

yep, i realised that l8r smallpaul, thnx, perhaps the solution would be to open the forging option only AFTER the NUB ends; this will also provide a small compensation to ppl who feel dejected when their NUB gets over....finally, there will be something to look forward to when the NUB finishes :)

I won't drop this.
Throwing my support behind this.
i agree that it should be explained to them but not enforced so early, they will realize whats wrong and think the game is stupid and probably leave.

Forging! Is counter productive to NUB. Biggest waste of BA besides not using it at all. Teach them how to use Help! (Like, make them find a link that requires searching through Help!) Navigation would help them more than more than banging on that useless piece of armor or weapon. I see these items in auctions from time to time and just shake my head. What a waste.

Chain, what aren't you dropping?
I agree with you, forging sucks. What do you need us to do? Do I need to schmooze Jonathan with martinis and such? Hm, if I did that I would lament the layers of damage reduction and other step-wise things FAR before I would worry about forging problems.
But yeah, forging is a joke, and I know quite a bit about forging. Learning about it was, sadly, the only way to make it interesting and seemingly worthwhile...

didn't we already know this?
It hasn't been fixed since forever, what makes you expect results?

Nope. Sorry. Not this time. It's got to be fixed if you ever want this game to go anywhere. You don't give a player bad advice from the start and expect them to stick around after following it.

WHOA! this game isn't going anywhere?
Thats it, I want off this ride. I demand retribution!
I want POPcorn!
it sounds like a cruel joke. the game tells you that you can do this, just everyone is going to tell you not to. so isnt it funny? there are always new players!

...
Jon hasn't forgotten about forging.. it's just difficult to please everybody when it comes to preserving a largely monotonous act, meanwhile trying to interest those people who think that forging sucks because it is a monotonous act. Any ideas on how to make it more fun and suck less?
Verifex - the monotony of forging has nothing to do with it being a new player goal.

I disagree, it does more good than bad

Barely, and I'm not sure that it doesn't.

lol....having a tutorial that offers a few suggestions that need correcting is far better than havin no tutorial at all, Mr. Llama.
