Metal Gear Solid 2? What the HELL? (spoilers) (in Off-topic)

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] June 19 2008 1:22 AM EDT

I recently discovered the MGS series. And like 10 minutes ago I finally beat MGS2 and all I can say is.. what the HELL?

I enjoyed playing the first part as Snake, it seemed simple enough. I dare even say I enjoyed Raiden and his ninja flipping. But everything was going OK, except towards the end, I'd say abour 60% of the plant stage had the same idea. But then all of a sudden it's plot twist after plot twist after plot twist and by the time I killed Solidus, I didn't understand why the hell I was still playing.

I don't understand the point of the whole training setup. Ocelot thought the point was to test it on Raiden then reproduce it to make more super soldiers? Then apparently he was wrong, and that wasn't the point? So then why did the Patriots bother with this whole elaborate scheme? Why the hell does AI care what happens to the US? And how the hell is Raiden going to propose to Rosemary after she just completely bashed you when you were about to die?

Why were they trying so hard to recreate Shadow Moses? Ugh. And what does that have to do with information censorship? I'm an undeclared philosophy major but I guess my mind exploded when they tried to explain the connections.

Can anyone clarify? Thanks.

dude... did you just say undeclared philosophy major?

Best way to understand what's going on a little better?

Play MGS 3 and 4, for a start. They tie up a lot of the loose ends. The Patriots' plans become clear, then. Ocelot's even more so. (It will seem less fuzzy, at least.)

I got like more than halfway on MGS3 before I stopped and tried out 2 and ended up beating it.

I don't have a PS3, so MGS4 will never be an option.

And undeclared philosophy major as in philosophy will be my major next year when I can declare it.

Why? You really want to teach philosophy at some JC?

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] June 19 2008 1:46 AM EDT

I'm not going to teach philosophy. I was reading about it and jobs really don't hire you based on your major. But philosophy teaches you to write well, to read well, to think analytically/critically, which are good skills to have. So by choosing philosophy I still have a large number of job opportunities, I guess so long as they aren't technical, involving mathematics or science.

I guess that explains it... it's not like you're getting a history degree... or worse yet... Art History...*Shudder*

I havent played 4 yet, I'm trying to stay away from all MGS4 spoilers for a few more days until i get it.

But I've beaten every MGS game except 4.
I always thought they were tyring to copy shadow moses for some kind of project? Was it S2? or like Solid Snake project or something? I cant remember.
I believe in a nutshell that the Patriots secretly control everything thats been happening the U.S.

Play MGS3 to learn more about the Patriots. Also the sequal to 3 is Portable Ops for PSP.

MGS1 is also great if you havent played it, better then MGS2 imo. The PS1 version i think has slightly better voice acting for a few character differences but the Gamecube version has better graphics and i hear plays more like MGS2.

Regardless of the plot, I've found this series to be amazingly fun and more than incredible in detail and depth. I spend a lot of time, in every game I play, searching every nook and cranny trying to find everything, and this is the only game I've found that makes me feel as though the developers know what I'm doing.

But as far as the plot is concerned... I dunno super soldier... genome madness.
Play the first one first. Well you probably don't need to go back to that NES stuff, you can start with PS1.

But it seems the plot for the game, whichever one, is incidental, and everyone is a pawn in the big plot. To figure it all out is to play all of them, and to play all of them would be sad; because I would hate to see this series end.
Thats like saying (as I imagine it), "I figured out the meaning of life." By then its either 'too late' or 'who cares'.
