I was speaking with a worker at our local veterans affairs office just last week, these stories are the reasons they do the job.
He told me a story of a man who had his benefits canceled by mistake in the 50's. Thanks to work he did the man was going to get a check well into the six figure range. The man was in his eighties and will be able to live like a lotto winner for at least a little while, not nearly enough thanks but something at least.
