Chat starts at the beginning of the tutorial now (in General)

AdminJonathan August 7 2008 7:25 AM EDT

Currently, slightly under 30% of new players who create an account finish the tutorial. For the next couple weeks, we're going to try starting chat at the beginning of the tutorial rather than the end increases this number.

Note to the Chat Ops:
Remember, some of the language and acronyms that we don't accept on CB is very much a part of the way people "chat" out in www land. It may take some new players a little while to adapt to our way of doing things.
Be tolerant - don't rush into a kick, but speak with the person first and educate them. Do it in PM if necessary to avoid embarrassing or antagonising the new player.

thanks im finally able to chat :)

first joined a chat at 2.5m score must be a record lol

PoisoN August 7 2008 8:59 AM EDT

How about putting a few screenshots on the front page, so players could have a look first?

TheHatchetman August 7 2008 9:21 AM EDT

Actually, screenshots of this game would likely be more of an interest killer :P If you don't know what you're doing, this game looks like a snooze fest in images. Earlier chat can very often mean earlier knowledge though, which results in more earlier interest.
I APPORVE!

QBJohnnywas August 7 2008 9:24 AM EDT

Apporve? Isn't that an island in the Mediterranean?

TheHatchetman August 7 2008 10:06 AM EDT

>.<

{cb1}Linguala August 7 2008 10:40 AM EDT

I thought he mistyped and meant to say "apporte", which is french for "fetch" :)

As to the idea, it got about time :p
And now the tutorial itself :)

QBOddBird August 7 2008 2:36 PM EDT

This is a great change. :)

I hope it works...I would expect that once a new player enters Chat, the likelihood that s/he'll get hooked into the game would be greater.

Newbies chatting ftw!

AdminJonathan August 14 2008 12:49 PM EDT

As near as I can tell lurking in New Players this has not made any difference in the week it's been live.

Anyone in NP have a different experience?

Hakai [Aye Phelta Thi] August 14 2008 12:54 PM EDT

Not really. I try to talk to them when they finish the tutorial and enter, but I don't even think they see me. And the ones that do talk don't ask questions, they just say, "hi," and disappear. But maybe that's just my experiences... *shrug*

QBOddBird August 14 2008 12:59 PM EDT

It's helped insofar as a couple of the Dragon Cave members I've been leading over here ended up in Chat - after talking to them a bit they decided to try the game out. If there hadn't been Chat, they would not have done any more than gone to that thread to click their eggs.

Aside from that, however, I'm not really active enough in New Players and not many others are either. I'm there, but I'm not *there* enough to talk to players when they enter. And that's what they need to see, someone welcoming them.

AdminNightStrike August 14 2008 1:07 PM EDT

So it sounds like this change needs to be coupled with more actual activity from current members in the new players room.

AdminJonathan August 14 2008 1:16 PM EDT

two different changes. more activity in NP would be effective no matter when newbies drop in.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] August 14 2008 1:17 PM EDT

more "old timers" in new players? But as we can be in more rooms then one at the same time, should the mentors and admins have the new player room standard in their chat room at start up?

AdminJonathan August 14 2008 1:22 PM EDT

> should the mentors and admins have the new player room standard in their chat room at start up?

if you can't be bothered to add it to your room list, you don't belong there.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] August 14 2008 1:31 PM EDT

why not create some sort of incentive program for various activities including being active in new players? i would suggest not doing cb cash but rather something like ba tokens or blacksmith credits (i like the ba tokens better and they could be 25 ba or 50 ba).

perhaps the referall program could switch over to these rewards as well. perhaps they could be turned in through the existing "get more" ba dialog as to save on programming. admins could hand them out or chat ops. if that is not good then perhaps jon could appoint some new incentive ops.

i am sure we could think of some other things to reward people for as well.

INDColtsFan18 August 14 2008 1:45 PM EDT

bad idea...

SBW August 14 2008 1:47 PM EDT

not exactly... it could work with some tweaking. that would build more incentive for new players. I like the idea.

QBOddBird August 14 2008 1:48 PM EDT

Unfortunately, I'm seeing the idea turning out the way New Players goals do.

"hey guys, I'm showing up in NP to collect my BA tokens"

an hour later

"ciao"

AdminJonathan August 16 2008 1:50 PM EDT

Switched chat back to post-tutorial.
