Armor Store (in General)
"Why do we have DCMs and Heaumes? Are things like this intentional new player traps? Is it supposed to be part of the intrinsic difficulty of CB?"
It was late last night that I replied, and the more I think about it, the more I think it deserves a new thread.
Problem:
DCMs and Heaumes doesn't give enough AC to make the penalty worthwhile, especially at low level.
Suggestions:
1) as before, raise the effect (AC granting effect) of the low level armor, and give them a damage prevention cap.
2) new idea, actually lower the penalty so that they are useful. I think the steep upgrade curve it has due to lower base AC would stop it affecting the higher level teams.
I think the lower level item need to be more "comparable" to the high end item. I think it just need to be a little bit weaker with a steep curve, so the difference between a BoNE and Tulwar is not noticeable until you start upgrading?

Why do we have most of the items in this game? The vast majority of them are useless.
On the weapon side, this is partially due to both the N*B and the current damage upgrade non-curve. The proliferation of "rare" items is yet another problem contributing to these items being useless.
With MPRs getting higher and higher, and teams getting more powerful quicker...
Weapons and armor need to scale dynamically, no?
That's what's causing the problem right now. MPR inflation, but no equipment stats inflation.
"On the weapon side, this is partially due to both the N*B and the current damage upgrade non-curve."
We've not had Katana's sell seriously for over 15K for over a year! ;)
Why are equipment stats and costs to upgrade not in relation with the top networth of a given piece of equipment?
There must be a reason that I do not get.
Why do we have armor? We should have armour instead.

"We've not had Katana's sell seriously for over 15K for over a year!"
I remember buying my base Executioner's Swords for well over a million early on in CB2's history. I barely was able to sell them upgraded for a few hundred thousand.

The cream of the armor and weapon selections invariably rise to the top. Armor-wise, people strictly use leathers or high-end gear; Anything from Chain Mail to Fluted Steel Cuirass is useless, which is over half of all body armors. Same goes for boots- there are leathers and high-end gear. And gloves. And cloaks. And helms and shields.
Weapons are a bit different, since new players seem to grab whatever "looks" good. However, veterans will again say that Katanas are the best low-level weapon (with Elven Stilettos having some fans as well), and the rest is all Big Five.
I suggest either making the "crap" items useful (somehow, I don't really care), or better yet, giving them each unique effects (again, what, I don't know). We have the new Elven Stiletto showing us how low weapons SHOULD look like, why not do the same for all the stuff nobody uses?
The problem is certainly much greater than just Double Chain Mails and Heaumes.

A *very* old chat log that may still somewhat apply:
<Jonathan> FB/CoC is kind of a lesser version of the "double cm trap" :)
<[GR8]The_Chemist> A Great Axe [56x7] (+3), A Bastard Sword [40x8] (+0), A Glaive [42x6] (+2) for sale
<sutekh137> what is the double cm trap?
<bartjan> Double Chain Mail ??
<imnota{beGGer}Miandrital> but mushu your mage sits around for two rounds taking damage doesnt he?
<Jonathan> double cm looks like a great deal if you haven't read the faqs on how much the dx penalty is :)
<sutekh137> or at least not doing much!
<sutekh137> oh, lol...sorry, i missed the abbreviation...
<imnota{beGGer}Miandrital> jon how does that apply to fb and coc?
<Jonathan> because FB is almost always a better spell than CoC
<[Potty-Mouth]Mushu> he makes people think the stronger spell is better

So he finds it funny that he tricks new players into choosing the wrong armor, that may effectively ruin there team, and prevent them from winning, and eventually quitting from frustration?
I saw we get rid of all the worthless gear and make it much easier for new players to "pick up and play".
So many choices are not always a good thing.
Would you rather choose between 5 gross lollipops or 1 good lollipop?

Players that either read the manual, listen to others for advice or pay attention to their battle results, aren't they allowed an advantage over those that don't?

What did I read that right? CoC was just a joke? It is now alongside SG, but before?

Why do we have most of the items in this game? The vast majority of them are useless.
Define useless, please.
an item is useless when there is a strictly better or near-strictly better alternative (another item that cannot be used along with it or simply not using it at all) for any purpose.
3) maybe make rare items actually rare?

If rare items were actually rare, then we'd all be using useless items.
And if useless items are useless..
Well, I think making rare items rare is a useless idea by default.
