Single Minion =/= Boring (in General)

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 24 2008 3:44 AM EDT

Nor Simple.

I didn't want to clutter the Tutorial threat, but feel the need to say this.

It's actually harder to run a single and lower minion count team than it is to run a 4 minion one.

As you *cannot* have all the goodies you want/need to make yourself effective.

You have to pick and choose what to use, and try to overcome the in built difficulty of only having a single minions worth of ability slots. The Trade off for this is concentration of XP.

As for boring, how is it more boring having a AFBM than having a 20 HP AS minion, 20 HP AMF minion, 20 HP EC Minion and not-so-single FB mage and having a Training Set? Still as easy to train. Still as no brainer as for what to train. Yet here you have no difficult choice of AMF or EC. Anti Mage (because Decay hurts) or stop those Damn 100% CTH Archers hitting you through EC.

What's more boring than a Tank/Archer/Mage backed by a HP/PL second minion?

What's more boring than an AS/GA 4 minion Team?

What's more boring than....

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 24 2008 3:49 AM EDT

"Is this a clue for next changemonth?"

Well Fireball can't be more nerfed really. So I'm assuming there will be more disadvantages to single and low minion count teams. As if PL, Aura's, kill slots and the new RoE isn't enough.

Great...

QBJohnnywas October 24 2008 3:49 AM EDT

I've always loved single minions. You're restricted to the point that strat decisions become that much more difficult to make. And yet the XP focus is delicious and so effective that it's worth the work.

I do like 4 minion teams (AS/GA has been a favourite mix for a very long time where they're concerned so :P)

Single minion tank...I'm so tempted to start over with an NCB, ToA and large weapon...so tempted...

FailBoat[SG] [Forever Alone] October 24 2008 4:39 AM EDT

I'm doing it right now JW, its fun. Although I just went all out on the archer.

And sadly, with Jon's statement of hinting at next changemonth, I figure that my team will probably be getting a nerf of some kind. Guess I might as well start saving up for three minions so I can join everyone else.

Unappreciated Misnomer October 24 2008 5:16 AM EDT

you might think its boring but that just means you have no plans beyond that. currently i am running a single minion team with plans to add a second to train AS+junction and change my tattoo to a halidon from a SF, and have a mage tank, it just takes too much darn money.

AdminJonathan October 24 2008 11:08 AM EDT

> It's actually harder to run a single and lower minion count team than it is to run a 4 minion one.

That may be, but challenging is not the antonym of boring.

Creating css-based layouts that work in IE6 is chellenging, but still boring.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 24 2008 11:11 AM EDT

jon, if you are that much against them as a strategic decision just get rid of that option. have teams created with 2 to 4 minions and only allow single minions by firing or not at all.

boring is a subjective term though.

Cube October 24 2008 11:14 AM EDT

dudemus.. Why would it make sense to get rid of them? We still have Tulwars.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 24 2008 11:16 AM EDT

ah, the tulwar argument...i cannot argue with that logic.

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 24 2008 1:30 PM EDT

Single minions are boring, but they also are great for money making.

QBJohnnywas October 24 2008 2:24 PM EDT

I feel a poll coming on! Single Minion: Yay or Nay??

Colonel Custard [The Knighthood] October 24 2008 2:37 PM EDT

I liked my single-minion team when I ran it. I like my 2-minion team now that I'm running it. I think the stat slot vs. exp concentration trade-off is hugely interesting.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 24 2008 2:42 PM EDT

but you can get xp concentration without that stat tradeoff any longer, the only advantage now given by singledom is that you can get that xp concentration while still using a tattoo. that small advantage is not anywhere near the kill slots, stats, skill slots, ed slots, eo slots and armor slots you get with multis.

single minion teams cannot compete with equal level multi minion teams. we might as well go full fledge excitement and force all teams to be four minions!

QBsutekh137 October 24 2008 2:51 PM EDT

Well, Jonathan, as far as I know, player counts are pretty darn important to you as well, yes? As important as making a statement against something you have deemed "boring"?

Challenging is the _only_ reason some people stick with an online game. After all, you have literally thousands of competitors out there.

My advice is to not make any changes involving fewer choices, especially if some of those choices light a fire under potential (and existing) players.

And you might also want to play a little more regularly before you define something as boring. "Single minion" is the not even near the top of any boring list in my mind. RoS, RoBF, and PL all represent pure, unadulterated boredom MUCH better.

AdminJonathan October 24 2008 3:47 PM EDT

> Challenging is the _only_ reason some people stick with an online game. After all, you have literally thousands of competitors out there.

You've been reading my posts long enough to know that I usually mean what I say, neither more nor less. I was reacting to GL's implication that because single minion is challenging it is ipso facto interesting. I never said that challenge cannot also be a goal in its own right.

> My advice is to not make any changes involving fewer choices

Yes, I know which side of the single minion debate you come down on. Perhaps you are right.

BootyGod October 24 2008 4:04 PM EDT

Fewer choices = bad?

We need more tulwars! Tulwar2, back in action! :O

Vicious Cat October 24 2008 4:09 PM EDT

I've done single minion and multiple.
Interesting = making strat decisions on a similarly regular basis
Boring = clicking to get to the next decision
I don't understand Jon's problem with singles, but if he wants to limit us all to 3 1/2 minions then it's his game...

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 24 2008 4:21 PM EDT

Jon, can I ask then, why you think single minions are boring? If it's nothing to do with the challenge (or lack of) in playing one, then what is it?

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 24 2008 4:25 PM EDT

Sorry for the double post, I just want to add that in a Strategy game, I find challenge interesting. ;)

If CB wasn't a Strategy game, then challenge wouldn't be so much of a draw, nor probably as interesting.

But what makes interesting Strategy? Proably not the ease of it. :P

QBsutekh137 October 24 2008 4:50 PM EDT

Actually, single minions are a raspberry seed in my wisdom tooth in many cases -- they have the potential of foiling things that other teams can't, but are also susceptible to a set of variances all their own. So, I don't really know what side I am on. *smile* Unless you were referring to the laundry list of things I find more boring, in which case, yes, I am guilty of "broken record" syndrome to be sure.

Your point that "challenging" is not the opposite of "boring" (as a rule) is well-spoken and well-heard (at least by me).

I guess we'll see what future changes bring! *smile*

What a great quote!
