Ranged shield (in General)

haven't thought through the details yet, but how about a shield that greatly blocks ranged attacks; so easily upgradable AC, but is discarded during the last round of ranged, so that AC goes back down.
This way, strats that are melee based can have a chance to make it to melee.
no ranged attack can be performed while shield is equipped
no ability to dodge ranged attack, just greatly lower damage
lose shield in last round to get hit by ranged attack, as not to be too powerful.
no penalaties to dx, st, skills in melee
penalties to EO and ED
DD doesn't attack until first round of melee, so i guess FB and MM would be out of the question with this shield.
don't know if this has come up before. took a 3 year hiatis from cb2. glad to be back, the changes are cool. way to keep it fresh Jon.
just need to think of a counter to this shield before i think it could become a reality, can't be overpowered.

Only if it junctions and protects a familiar, otherwise I'm going to have to disagree with this one. Mageseekers still negate huge familiars fairly easily since they can't train evasion and can't protect themselves. Yes, DBs junction, and one can try to depend on AS, but it still doesn't work as well. DM kills the AS, and if not DM, AMF is probably eating the familiar alive already. DD familiars are at a mighty disadvantage on that, and this would simply exalt everyone else defensively while the DD familiars got nothing.
In other words, such a shield would only benefit "real" minions, and that doesn't seem fair to me with Mageseekers in play.
Just one man's opinion, however, other folks might love the idea...

i don't see why it wouldn't junction, skills are unaffected. just couldn't attack at all.
but i hope its not thought of as over powered as it goes away and you get hit in last round of ranged, and don't have that AC protection of a shield in melee.
maybe even throw in, if you have HoC, mages can hit in last round, no HoC, have to wait until melee.

lol... have you seen ranged damage recently? it is seriously nthing to brag about... plenty of melee teams around here

Badfish, thats the most intelligent thing said in this entire thread.
As an Archer, I do horridly low damage as it is. But what you're suggesting would force me to retrain and pick up something else. Whats to stop a team from getting two or three "kill slots" and then making them all have this shield. PL'd, it means that NO ranged damage would happen. And even then, in melee, I'm still considered to be using a ranged weapon so I stop doing damage then too...

Yeah, I think ranged is practically dead tank-wise. There are a couple of bows out there backed by huge ToAs that are viable, but after a year or so of complaining about evasion, why make it worse. Put on a Shield of Capacity and protect yourself in ranged and melee.

A descent sized PL Wall gets my archer into melee with no problem. because of my strat though SFBM and RoS GA are the only times my tank doesn't make it into melee. My fights rarely go over 15 rounds total.

the shield would be discarded in last ranged round, so bow would work in melee, i was just noticing a lot of my fights can end in ranged and felt bad.
in a way I think there should be enough parts to make a good defense against anything, but will require dedication, like MGS + RBF + Some AC + Elven Harberk (no RBF) + AMF + Other things to hose mage, but doing so means you are that much vulurable against tanks.
Bad bad bad...that's all I've got to say.
