Left 4 Dead (in Off-topic)

PearsonTritonRaveshaw November 21 2008 10:19 PM EST

Anybody have it? If so, we can so totally get some 4 player co op going on. This game rocks!

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, read the Gamespot review.

GM November 21 2008 10:41 PM EST

I got it. I think it's a bit overrated.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] November 21 2008 11:02 PM EST

Left 4 Dead is underrated, 89/100 doesn't do it justice.

Immersion + Zombies + Co-op + Cornfield = Profit

anyone who has heard me raving about it in chat should know what I mean.

Mojo Patroneus [My2ndClan] November 21 2008 11:22 PM EST

The game is pretty good.

The theme is tightly focused along a particularly conservative form of play, but with fan made maps and additions, the future looks rife with creativity and fun for the play style

Goodfish November 22 2008 12:34 AM EST

So the game itself isn't enjoyable? I'd rather eat my own head.

A game isn't worth purchasing if it's only worth playing with other people. That just forces a group of people to buy a sub-par game.

89/100 is way too high; I even played it for a bit and wouldn't give it over 60. Blech.

PearsonTritonRaveshaw November 22 2008 2:31 AM EST

Nothing beats the thrill and adrenaline of playing as a Tank in vs. mode. *drools*

The gameplay is simply excellent. All the weapons feel exactly how they should, realistic injuries, you limp when you're under half health or so, if you keep getting healed you'll eventually start to bleed and continuously lose health until 1 HP. If your HP reaches 0, then you are knocked down and can only shoot your pistol at half its normal firing rate, you have 300 HP that is easily removed if you're surrounded by a horde of zombies and once that's gone, you're gone. If your friends can save you before then, great! You remain among the living! If not, and your buddies aren't too close to the next safe house it's all too possible that they will stumble upon a random survivor and the player that died can resume the senseless slaughter of innocent homicidal zombies.

Oh there are special zombies too. Here are the unique zombies:
There is the boomer, a big fat guy, seriously, he is extremely fat. He sprays bile on "the survivors," who are the four characters that fight their way through the zombies. Also, if he is killed while being too close to anybody, he explodes and sprays bile on anybody in the immediate vicinity.

Then there's the smoker. Everybody hates the smoker... They are simply infuriating... They have this long tongue that can reach over 100m or so, (yeah, I'd hate to see anybody try and make out with those things...) and they shoot it and wrap it around their victims. If the target was facing in the direction of the smoker when he has the tongue wrapped around him, he can shoot for about one second before he becomes incapacitated and can't do anything and must rely on his buddies to either shoot the smoker's tongue off or kill the smoker. Gotta hate smokers on rooftops... *growl*

And there's the hunter, another extremely annoying nuisance. This speedy little guy is was obviously once an emo teenager, because he always has his hoodie down. Anyways, what this guy does is pounce on his victim and slash at them while they are unable to do anything. Most effective when their target is already surrounded by mindless zombies.

Then, I saved the best for last, the Tank! Think of the hulk, but uhh... not as cool... These bad boys are nearly impossible to take down solo. One punch sends the target flying and causes severe damage. Just the other day (as in, a few hours ago), I came up against one of these beasts on the roof of a hospital building, and his punch sent me flying off the roof and to my death. They run just as fast, if not faster, than the survivors, and can completely demolish the entire team of them. They also have the ability to pick up large rocks and throw them at their opponents. Oh, also, in vs. play, they have something like 5000 HP! w00h!

Yeah, this game rocks.

Goodfish November 22 2008 4:28 AM EST

Rave, you're basing your opinion entirely off the fact that you have three friends to play with.

Count me out. Relying on (mostly likely) people I don't know/like is a real pain in the butt, and I'm perfectly content with any of the other gajillion zombie games (namely Resident Evil 4). This is basically the same reason I hate Halo, because it's only worth playing multiplayer... but then, is it really that good of a game at all...?

Ariac November 22 2008 10:00 AM EST

^ I agree completely.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] November 22 2008 10:06 AM EST

Well, the game is certainly more fun with players, and infinitely more fun the harder the difficulty setting, part of it is the adrenaline rush, and part of it is the immersion - before every level starts, in the safe houses, my friend and I read all the messages written on the walls and whatnot, it really helps get you in the mindset that makes the game fun. Of course, the single players isn't horrible, but the AI on the bots will break the immersion for you.

All in all, I don't think you can judge a game poorly because you don't want to enjoy it the way it was designed to be enjoyed (co-op multiplayer)

kevlar November 22 2008 10:29 AM EST

I got the demo.. and the intro movie was one of the best done previews for a game I've ever seen. "all we did is cross the street" lol

I only played the demo single player and can say it didn't impress me the way I thought it would. The graphics and computer AI for the teamates is excellent, but the game seems to be move forward, and 100 zombies run at you... shoot till clear and repeat.

I think the level of half life 2, "Ravenholm" was much better for this theme, but I haven't played the entire L4D game.

I give it 7/10 (demo)

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] November 22 2008 10:31 AM EST

What the demo doesn't give you is a finale scenario, and that is really where the crazy stuff goes down, where you see people getting ripped from safety at the last moment and pulled into huge hordes of zombies and whatnot, really what the preceding levels are is seeing how well you can manage your health and how well you can work as a team on higher difficulties.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] November 22 2008 10:32 AM EST

And as an aside, even the advanced difficulty is relatively easy, expert difficulty is where it becomes a challenge, and a challenge in this game is what really draws you into it.

GM November 22 2008 2:10 PM EST

I played 4 player co-op on Expert. I really didn't find it that fun. I may give multiplayer a shot though.

kevlar November 22 2008 2:25 PM EST

one of the best 3rd party mods ever for half life...

"Well, the game is certainly more fun with players"

Isn't that about the same concept for all games? Granted that there are some games that are fun to play solo and such, but even those tend to get a bit boring.

Give a lot of (if not most) rpg based games a multiplayer engine and the game gets that much better.

kevlar November 22 2008 5:10 PM EST

I never liked Warcraft games or Command and Conquer games with multiplayer, found the campaigns much more fun. Starcraft on the other hand, was brutally addicting online.

PearsonTritonRaveshaw November 22 2008 7:50 PM EST

Yeah I like the game because of all the infinite possibilities. Just last night I was playing vs. mdoe, where four people play as the survivors and there are four people that play as the special class zombies, which are the boomer, smoker, hunter, and on rare occasions, the tank. Well, we were inside a hospital, and we had just called the elevator to go up to the roof so we could be evacuated via helicopter, and just a few seconds after we pressed the button to call the elevator, hordes of zombies came after us. We had to fight them off, and after we killed all of them, another horde came, and when we killed them, the elevator arrived and we all went inside. I could hear another horde coming in the distance, so I wanted to get out of there ASAP and I pressed the button. Well, there was a smoker lurking out there and he shot his tongue at one of my team mates and pulled him out of the elevator just as the doors were closing, and she screamed the whole way. Now THAT just cracked me up. It was hilarious.

AdminQBVerifex November 22 2008 10:20 PM EST

I played it online with some of my friends, and it is definitely more fun with friends. Without friends, it's a cool zombie game. I wouldn't go saying this game is better then everything else out there, but I would say that this is pretty much the only game in town if you wanna fight zombies with your friends. There aren't really any other zombie games THIS good out there.

PearsonTritonRaveshaw November 23 2008 12:56 AM EST

Of course it's more fun with humans. It's a game that requires teamwork and strategy, and humans are better at that than computers.

Maraxis November 23 2008 1:38 AM EST

Hey, just thought I'd read your thread, guys, I hope that's okay. It seems like it'll be a pretty good read, no one I hate has posted, so we'll see. Okay, have fun, talk to you all soon XOXOXO.

Maraxis November 23 2008 1:44 AM EST

Judging by the enthusiasm of those who liked it, I think the game merits an honest chance. I've seen nothing but rave reviews from professional game magazines/sites etc., and so I'm a bit surprised at the number of complaints registered in this thread. Regardless, I'll post my own opinion once I've given the game a try for myself.

XOXOXO

I got bored with it in 2 days. Too Repetitive.
