Why is most of the wiki only 300px wide ? (in Off-topic)

Sickone December 8 2008 12:02 AM EST

I find it odd and quite annoying that most wiki pages are so "slim".
I looked at the source and there it says "td width 300px", so I guess it's intentional... but... why ?
Or is it a bug and... umm... how do you report it then ?

What do you mean exactly?
Post a picture?

This is what I mean : Linkage

Pretty much every page on the wiki looks like that for me.
The only exception is the main page, where the left side is like that, while the right side covers all the rest of the space.

Try another browser, because it works normal for me.

Sickone December 8 2008 8:31 AM EST

I normally use Opera for just about anything, but CB won't work properly in it, so I'm forced to use the only other browser I have, namely IE7. IE 7.0.5730.11 more exactly.
Yeah, it does display as you would want it to be displayed in Opera, yet... not helping.

Quote from the source code:

<table cellpadding=0px cellspacing=0px width=100%>
<tr valign=top>
<td width=300px>
<h1>Tips for New Players</h1>

In other browsers, the " <td width=300px> " part is overriden by the " width=100%>" part... but to be honest, the way IE7 displays it is more logical in this particular case - if you enforce a cell width, you would expect the cell to be of that particular width, even if the table should fill the screen... even if you only have one cell in the entire table (and not much else except that table).

Bottom line, there is no need to have a " <td width=300px> " line in each and every page of the wiki in the first place, especially if you only have one single cell on the entire page. Heck, there is not much of a reason to even HAVE a table at all in the first place in each and every page.

Yes in IE7 the wiki is borked. While in Firefox 3.x the wiki looks normal.

Is CB giving no more support for IE7 or just waiting for IE8?

Sickone December 8 2008 11:01 AM EST

I don't know about the rest of the people, but I really consider TWO browsers to be more than enough, I'm not about to install a THIRD one just so everything works fine on CB :P
Besides, IE is, like, the "default" user browser anyway...

It sounds like a simple fix anyway, as well as a pretty significant one. So hopefully someone gets it fixed.

By the way, is there a way to get Jon's attention on something ? I mean, he's not online very much, and no idea what he's reading and not...

I guess I'll just chatmail him a link to this thread ?

smallpau1 - Go Blues [Lower My Fees] December 8 2008 11:42 AM EST

Its because it's all two columns wide, the only page that utilizes the 2 columns is the main page, notice the first column is 300px wide. The td width 300px is also in the main page source.

Sickone December 8 2008 7:25 PM EST

Yeah, I know, but that breaks *every other* page on IE7 :p

I'm not trying to diss anyone or take anything away from the thread, but is it that bad for the wiki to be small?

Brakke Bres [Ow man] December 16 2008 6:01 AM EST

Say at what resolution is cb optimized?
800*600?

I'm using 1900*1200 and I get the same effect as displayed above.

How many of you are working with a 15inch monitor these days?
