Smokin sale: Bioshock = 5 bones (in Off-topic)

kevlar December 29 2008 4:54 PM EST

I haven't had a chance to play Bioshock since the rave reviews that were release a while ago... I nearly bought it for 20 bucks last month, but definately nabbed it for $4.99 at Steam's Holiday sale site...

I'm hoping this is gunna be a blast for 5 bucks, anyone played it?

This is for PC Only... Darn it I wanted the 360 version. Oh well.

{cb1}Linguala December 29 2008 6:20 PM EST

I played it on PC...to be honest, it came over as old-school.
But definitely a good game to play. It has a great replayability value, it'll certainly be worth that 5 bucks.

Oh man. I LOVED Bioshock.

It was one of the very few FPS I played that was relatively unique. An interesting combat system, fantastic storyline, and you will be in a constant state of fear. Seriously. Even once you become really strong and you've played it, the moment a Big Daddy gets close to you, you will be Freaking. Out.

Worth 5 bucks? Definitely.

On that note, it does lose a TAD bit of it's charm later on. It's a small thing, but once you pick up some of the heavier weaponry, it becomes too tempting to simply blow stuff away in two shot combos. So, my advise, make sure you're having fun. The easiest way in Bioshock is rarely the funnest! :P

Buying it- and Audiosurf- as we speak.

Thank God you let me know or I would've missed this entirely.

iBananco [Blue Army] December 29 2008 7:46 PM EST

Dear god, don't get Audiosurf. It's absolutely terrible.

Yukk December 29 2008 7:55 PM EST

Yeah - What Goodfish said ! Thanks for the heads up !

Definitely worth $5 !

Goodfish December 29 2008 9:05 PM EST

I like Audiosurf. My friend bought it and it's a great time-waster for when you have just a little bit of time. I find it really great for spending an hour between classes when there really isn't time to do anything else or get into a deeper game (read: fire up an RPG). Some songs are just really fun to play on Audiosurf.

And it's five freaking dollars. Even if I only play it for twenty minutes (which I have already surpassed), I'm not going to cry about it.

TF2 is back on the list for $9.99. But Bioshock is not on that main page, but it is here:

Steam sucks, you guys know what they did?

All the prices they had in dollars they replaced them with euro's. (a nice increase of about 40%)

And now they are also charging VAT all of a sudden. (wow another increase of 19%)

Thats a nice increase of the price by 59%!
Yes we guys in Europe are getting screwed over once again by an American company...

So I'm no longer buying any game from those frauds...

As a word of warning, Bioshock totally messed with my computer.

Installing it went fine, but upon running it, the game immediately closed and I got the rather infamous "bioshock.exe has stopped working" error message. Went online, figured out what caused it, and updated all my drivers and reinstalled DirectX10. Restarted my computer and my audio didn't work. At all. Couldn't roll back, couldn't update- my computer thought the drivers were okay but they were in fact corrupt. Chkdsk couldn't fix anything, which meant system restore wouldn't work. Called Dell, wound up getting Remote Assistance. They said I needed to reinstall Vista.

So here I am, about ten hours of work later. And for whatever sick, twisted act of God, Bioshock works just fine.

Just a heads up.

kevlar December 31 2008 5:15 PM EST

I'm having the same problem, Vista is such a pain in the ... after installation of the game through Steam, everything was fine but then after the game started, I had no sound.

I googled "Bioshock no sound" and bam! so many posts about people having problems with sound for it with Vista. The main fix seems to be to go to the bioshock.exe (not the shortcut for the desktop one, the actuall root one) and change the properties to "support Windows XP". I did that but still had audio problems and think it's because I run it through Steam. I backuped the game onto CD and plan to reinstall it without Steam and see if it helps.

Vista........... grrrrrrrrrrrr

this link explains it better than me:

Goodfish December 31 2008 6:02 PM EST

The plethora of "fixes" that I found:

update your graphics card and audio drivers
re-install DirectX10
enable stereo mixing
run steam in XP compatibility mode
disable reverb and EAX sound

For whatever reason, reinstalling Vista actually worked for me, but I have no clue why.

Yukk December 31 2008 6:16 PM EST

Actually, Bioshock was a bit of a pain for me when I first installed it. In XP, with a decent graphics card I was getting 2 fps just watching the logos with what I thought were up to date drivers. Turns out Nvidia made a new set of drivers because of Bioshock and with those, everything was fine, but what a pain, waiting for 1/2 hr to get to the main menu to quit and find a fix.

kevlar December 31 2008 6:21 PM EST

I guess this 5 dollar deal had some fine print afterall lol

Goodfish December 31 2008 6:38 PM EST

To be honest I kind of wanted to reinstall Vista anyways. Haha.
